Blackburn Park - Trail, Columbia, Maryland

Blackburn Park - Trail, Columbia, Maryland

DESCRIPTION

A fairly small area with trails in the woods and more open, grassy terrain in the vicinity of the disc golf course. The trails in the woods are the best. Many different types of terrain, ranging from a very rooty section, to 3 or 4 stream crossings. Somewhat hilly, but no real killers. Lots of failry gentle ups and downs on the main trails, although some of the interconnecting trails are wicked. There is also a trail that goes into the Avalon section of Patapsco. This trail features several logs and stream crossings.

Good trails. It is actually Rockburn Park in case anyone was having trouble pulling this up. This is a great way to get into Patapsco.

This park is very small. Two main loops (one is about 2 miles long, the other, 3 miles). You can view a trail map here: http://www.co.ho.md.us/RAP/RAP_HoCoParksRockburn.htm#anch65534

The trails are very well maintained, which is a plus, but the lack of obstacles left a lot to be desired for me. There were no real challenges here, in my opinion. This trail is a great introduction to trail riding for beginners, but nost others will tire quickly of riding in small circles. Fairly high traffic (pedestrian, equestrian and bike) area, as well.

Customer Service

Start by the baseball fields. If you start at the first parking lot you find you'll be riding through the frisbee golf course (like I did!) and getting in people's way... Once you enter the trail turn right, if you turn left you'll soon be at another parking lot. Once you're on the trail, you'll figure out the system rather quickly, and once you do, you'll be ready to leave. :)

I heard that you could access Avalon from Rockburn, but I didn't go searching for the cut across. If you're a beginner, Id recommend against going to Avalon, unless you like to hike-a-bike.

ROCKBURN!!!
Nice trail. I always hit this trail first when the warm weather hits. Its a good prelude before I start ridin' patapsco. Also They have great races here several time a year. The Fathers Day Frenzy is the one I always enter.

Since I moved to Eldersburg, I'm 15 minutes from the Mckelden area of Patapsco. Not quite as many trails as Avalon, but just as good a ride.

Cross the creek for an old dirt bike trail or follow the trail down the hill to reach Avalon. Nice trails, a few 'unmarked trails' that cross the stream.

I use this park as a warm up ride for the Avalon area. It gives me about 30 minutes of easy riding before crossing Landing Rd and entering Avalon at rockburn branch trail. Mostly hard pack with some roots. There's really no technical areas or hills so you can really get a good warmup. This is also a great place to take beginers. There's plenty of parking and no fee to enter so this is a good spot to start group rides.
