Stillwater trail - Trail, Orono, Maine

DESCRIPTION

Amazing single track with lots of drops, jumps, and ver nicely made bridges. Ones of the better trails in orono links onto many many many other long trails with all trails linked together over 10 miles of trail.

I have lived in Orono and have never heard of this being called the Stillwater Trail (there's no connection to SW Ave or SW river based on what I see), but I would agree with the previously posted rating except to leave maybe a little room for a few better trails in our area. You could start at Orono High School, go up the street next to it (Westwood), go on the gravel driveway at the end, take a right into the woods just before the Woodbury house, and hang any one of three sharp uphill lefts, then generally bear right (get in a good set of WV's here), find the water tower, take the sharp descent to the boggy exit onto Forest Ave, cross the street into the OLT trails again, and take your next one or two lefts (another sharp climb with some slimy roots/rocks). Go up up and find the highway, then travel along highway (fast fast) to either first right (then take left at bottom of somewhat tricky descent), or to end and elbow back into woods and find the MBNA business park, exit parking lot to right to Bennoch Road, cross road and skirt along treeline at edge of cemetary to entrance back into woods, follow snaky fall away to river (fast fast), link with river trail (see other reviews for our area), take this trail to Old Town Water District station to Stillwater Ave (now we have a reason for the name),right on the Ave, left at McDonald's on College Ave extension, left at unmarked gravel drive to quick little drop back to Stillwater river, up up a little tricky part following the river's bend (including a nice little ledge run and some good roots/rocks here and there), small stream crossing, to a gravel drive that is in the University Forest but you wouldn't know it, left on drive and follow bend to College Ave extension again (look out for the Bolt, if you don't you'll know what I mean), cross street to another path deeper into the forest, take first left and follow gradual twists and rise to top of Devil Hill, drop fast fast and come out on Sewall Road. All told trail length so far is about 6 miles, with really minimal road travel and a good mix for anyone except those who like 30' drops or flat, dry, dusty racing. In this area the trails are too numerous to name or recount. Anyone wanting to link up with experienced locals who know the way and ride all the time, you are welcome to email me to set it up. We welcome all comers.

Great trails. These trails are the Orono Land trust trails. The city takes very good care of them.

Customer Service

Park@MBNA off Bennoch rd or you could probably park in the boy scout parking lot on Forest Ave. Everyone is very nice around here. If someone is in the building, just walk in and ask if you can park. If noone is there, it will be okay. The buildings are usually only used two to three times a week.

New trails in the University forest. We have a burgeoning trail network coming into existance up here. They are amazing.
