RIVER TRAIL ORONO - Trail, ORONO, Maine

RIVER TRAIL ORONO - Trail, ORONO, Maine

DESCRIPTION

THE TRAIL IS FAST SINGLE TRACK RIDDLED WITH PERPENDICULAR ROOTS. THERE USED TO BE FAIRLY LARGE TREES THAT HAD FALLEN ACROSS THE TRAIL. USERS PLACED PARTS OF SMALLER TREES IN FRONT AND BEHIND THE TREES SO THEY COULD BE RIDDEN OVER. THEY ARE BETTER TO LAUNCH OFF IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH SKILL AND BIG ENOUGH JELLY BEANS. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST ENJOYABLE TRAILS THAT I HAVE BEEN ON. IN THE SPRING PART OF THE TRAIL FLOODS CREATING A POND HEADSET DEEP WHICH CAN BE COLD BUT RIDEABLE. THERE AREN'T ANY SERIOUS CLIMBS WHICH MAKES THIS A VERY FAST RUN. CAN GET TWISTY AT TIMES SO WATCH IT WHEN YOU ARE BARRELING AT 25MPH AND FIND THAT THE TRAIL BEARS LEFT 90 DEGREES. TRY IT OUT IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA. HOOK UP WITH THE LOCALS TO MAKE THIS A PART OF A LARGER LOOP.

The riding in and arond the umo campus is really fun.. I attended UMO for two years inthe early 90's and the best part about beind there was the mountain biking... For most of the trails you will nw=ever run into another rider or hiker so the area is super peaceful.. i have driven back there from nj just to ride these trails. I have some specific memories of riding with the rest of the guys fom the Ski rack and also Beau Lambert and Scott noble.. I had so much fun and my dorm was right buy bumstock were alot of trails start... my only regret was that IU didnt ride enough.. If you are out there riding these trail e mail me and tell me how the are now 5 years later...

To get to the Underwear trail ride the Orono river trail to it's end until you hit Stillwater Ave. Turn right onto Stillwater and cross the bridge. At the light after the bridge turn left to go behind McDonalds. About 150 yards on your left there will be a dirt road that leads to the trail head. The UnderWear trail will dump you off on the same road a couple miles away across from another great Orono trail..Hochemen. Enjoy

The Orono river trail is a nice smooth tight trail that is ridden often. Most don't know about the river trail's knarly sister The Underwear Trail. The Underwear Trail consists of nasty roots, huge ledge dropoffs, short steep shoots, and panties hanging from the trees at a popular teenage party spot along the Penobscot river. This is my favorite trail of all time...maybe because I built half of the route.

Back in time when I lived in Orono, this was, and I'm sure, still is a great trail. There are twists, turns, and tight singletrack throughout. The trail is fast because it's flat, so you can really haul on this trail. If you can't find it, go to Rose Bike behind Pat's Pizza and ask anyone working in that shop to point you in the right direction. There is a drainage main about 2 or 3 minutes down the trail from the town side, there is a by-pass on the left hand side through the woods, it's usually a wet by-pass, but it is rideable, so you don't have to dismount to get around the concrete monstrosity. Near the far end of the trail, there are several steep drop ins that can be hiked up and ridden down, look for the cemetary on the left hand side where the banking gets steep. These are fun, because the run outs at the bottom are short, go too far and you end up in the Stillwater River. At the end, hook up with the lesser known, Underwear Trail. This you can find on College Ave Extension behind the McDonald's. There is a dirt road on the left probably 300 feet from McDonald's, go down the road, and let it rip. Technical parts, and some more great singletrack. Trail gets its name from the numerous pairs of women's underwear littering the trail and placed on certain trees, kind of like local teens trophies from their conquests of drunken nights by the river. After riding the Underwear Trail, hook up with the Ho-Chi-Minh trail. Double track that cranks through the woods. As stated before, any questions, ask the guys at Rose Bike in Orono.

Immediately after the 1st downhill onto the trail, try to get into your highest gear and then hammer. There are a couple of cool log bridges which can be cleared. Roots, tight sections of twisting singletrack make this a great ripper. There are three downed trees to clear and some other neat features, including a fun little downhill that pops you out at the water district building. From there hit Ho Chi Mihn, the underware trail or any of bob's backwoods specials.

Customer Service

Start at Rose Bike in Orono, and hook up with Dave H-endo, Backwards Bob and full face Mike and anyone else and then hammer, starting in Orono and along the Stillwater River into Old Town.

Very tame, but it beats Bennoch Rd if you want to get from OT to Orono. Don't miss the chutes and poop upslope on the OT side-that's where the real fun is. 4 stars is only because of the OT end poop.
