Acadia Nat'l Park - TRAIL

Acadia Nat'l Park - Trail, Bar Harbor, Maine

Primrose paths of gray gravel make this seem like a wilderness theme park. I had to come back to Bar Harbor and ride off a curb to get a bump. These are novice trails, but provide some great views on a decent day. The only thing remotely difficult is some of the climbs although they are smooth and graded. The ride was fun nevertheless, such as it was. If you rent a bike like I did, the bike shop closest to the center of town rents Raleighs for a higher price than the shop just down the street which rents Cannondales. They are owned by the same management. Go figure. I would rate these trails a 2.5, but will go with a 3 since the views are worth the trip.

ACADIA CARRIAGE TRAILS

The carriage trails are basically dirt roads created by John D. Rockefeller Jr at the time when automobiles were becoming popular. I believe the idea was to get away from autos and be in the wilderness. That being said these 'trails' are 16' wide non-technical crushed rock roads to beautiful locations all over Mount Desert Island through Acadia National Park. 45 miles of amazing bridges, ocean views, and cool fresh forest air.

If you looking for a challenge this isn't for you.

If your looking for a place to take the family and be out doors I would highly recommend riding Acadia.

Customer Service

Generally people drive to bike. In this case I would recommend parking by Eagle Lake heading around Witch Hole Pond to warm up then go from there. Bar Harbor Bicycle shop has free maps of the carriage trail network and tons of advice. Some times weather effects trail conditions.

Similar Products Used: If you loved the carriage trails I believe similar riding is on Schoodic Point but I haven't personally been.

If you looking for real mountain biking I would get out of the National Park because they don't allow it. Ellsworth has some riding and again I would steer riders to the local bike shop in Bar Harbor.

Riding the carriage trails at Acadia National Park was pretty fun. The trails are fine gravel and are very smooth, which makes for an easy ride and good speed. Some of the hills are steep, but they offer the reward of a good view and a fast descent. I enjoyed the ride up near aunt betty pond.

Being a native Mainer, I know. Acadia is about as bad as it gets for technical, challenging riding. It is about as good as it gets for great scenery and ocean views, that is, if it isn't foggy, as it usually is.

Customer Service

Get to the Jetport in Portland and head to Denver Int'l Airport and head for the foothills.

How should I put this......
Boring comes to mind although the views are absolutely incredible...have never seen views like this from a bike..but the riding was easier than fireroads. If you want to hammer some single just hop on a hiking trail.
You will get yelled at but it's the only challenging riding in Acadia. minus two stars for the lame riding.

Don't expect to mountian bike, its trail riding (carriage trails that is). The views are awesome, so relax and peddle your way around the park and enjoy the day.

Customer Service

Ride all the carriage trails.

My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon in Bar Harbor, and riding through Acadia was one of the many activities I chose to do. Easy to Moderate double track (carriage trails)through some of the most beautiful country. Great place to ride with your wife/fiancee/girlfriend, especially if she is not in for technical, body-abuse riding. There are miles of trails, we ended up riding approximately 30 miles. So bring lunch and a camera and plan to spend the better part of the day riding through the backcountry.

Customer Service

Pick up a map from a local bike shop or you will get lost.

Ok, I know this review is harsh but this is a mountain bike site! Looking at all the Outta-Statah's head to Bar Harbor with their SUV's and expensive dual suspension bikes, I just have to laugh. THERE IS NO REAL MT BIKING ALLOWED ON THE ENTIRE ISLAND!! The carrage trails are an absolute joke. I have ridden more technical roads on my road bike. If a pothole forms for some ungodly reason, a ranger is there to fill it on the spot. Bar Harbor is a great town with tons of stuff to do, so leave your mt bike at home. If you are with your family (w/ small children) these are perfect trails with great scenery. Good place to road bike also.

These trails are not mountain bike trails! But they are trails nevertheless. Actually the trails provide great training rides to build endurance. The are some decent grades which will tax the legs. The views are great but the real beauty in this place are the hiking trails. Since this is not a hike site I won't review them. As far as mtn biking they get 0 rubbers. As far as general trails go they would get 5 rubbers for sheer beauty and layout. So I'll equal it out and give 2 enduros. But you CAN ride any bike them.

Customer Service

All carriage Roads.
