The trail actually starts north of Cave Run. If you think you got the stuff of a mountain biker then go to the Northern Terminus and ride south to Cave Run. Tough is the word. Bring lots of tire repair stuff and wear long pants and shirts. Not for the weak biker.

Sheltowee/Morehead State Univ/Rodurn trail is a great trail. I have not road it sence 1999 when I was a student at Morehead. I really miss it, long logging road up-hills in spots, very scenic ridge line trails, and a couple of big down-hills. Road this trail for 4 years and never saw it all, some 20 miles with trails everywhere. I don't know the conditions today, but it was sort of a local trail back in the day.

This is, by far the best place to ride in Kentucky and was in Mountain Bike Mag. It's the training ground of one of the best riders in Kentucky. If you go Pack for the whole weekend because one day is not enough time to ride all the trails. This is a great place but be aware that you share the trails with horses. Most of the trails I ride Are single track with an emphases on the single part. However for those of you who like to climb, Cave Run lake offers some climbs that range from one mile to 2.5 and even one that may even be longer than that. Most of the climbs are rideable but some area require the will of the Man UP STairs to over come. And if you want to practice those tech. skills its the perfect place. Some of the switchbacks are so bad that you must pick up the bike and do an about face to make the turn. OVernight camping and Showers Are Avilible in the early months, May and June, but don't press your luck. Call forward to see what deal is with space at the campsites.
But by far this place is unique in that it offers such great trails for mountain bikers to ride plus its scenery is some of the best anywhere in Kentucky.

Customer Service

There is too many to choose from. For starters ride buckskin out and back then try some of the more advanced climbs.

Other parts of the Sholtowee are great, my I suggest S-tree in Jackson County Ky. off 421 and Turkey foot out side of Mckee which is located in the same area and is a part of the same trail which runs from Morehead Ky. to the Big South fork Park in Tennesee. But these should keep anybody busy for one season.

The only thing I wish about this trail is that I lived closer. When things are dragging in Cinci, and I find myself on my road bike alot, all it takes is a weekend on the Sheltowee and my interest in dirt redlines! There's some real epic stuff going on down there, and that's something there's not alot of in the Midwest. 50+ miles of undulating, twisting, scenic, trail that leads you deep into the Kentucky wilderness and doesn't want to give you back. Bring lots of GU cause you won't realize four hours have gone by and you're ready to pass out with another hour left back to the car. Awesome stuff! Don't miss it.

For a great tech ride with super views this is hard to beat. Youv'e got tight crevises that drop down about 10
yards, there are plenty of drop offs with some over 3'.
This trail is also very kind in wet weather.

I've riden this trail for 3 years now and it only gets better. I don't hesitate giving it 5 tires. I rode Colorado last summer and the only difference was the length of the climbs. In Summit County you make one climb and one downhill in a day, on the Sheltowee you can make 3-4 strong climbs and some great downhills. Throw in some hard core technical and you have a great ride. Colorado was huge air and pure spead but I didn't find a big difference in technical riding. If you get to KY, you have to ride this area, you won't regret it.

Customer Service

Anywhere in the Zilpo area. Sheltowee Trace is the best though.

I have been riding this trail since 1994 and it is fantastic -the other reviews are true!- If you want to ride somewhere for a weekend and never really ride the same trails this is for you - Very scenic - fast smooth sections, some double track - rocky technical down/up hills - Nothing really advanced but you can get a LONG way from your car in a hurry - the trails really lead you away from food, spare parts, and shelter - so come prepared! The soil is very sandy so mud isn't really a big problem - The last two times I rode there it was raining - we had come from Louisville, 2 hours away so we were going to ride regardless! - Bring spares, food, and water and make a day of it. Has to be one of the Best areas in Kentucky.

We had the opportunity to ride part of this trail this past weekend (7/3/99) while attending a family reunion in the area. The trail rocks! Alot of little up & down hills, a few rocks, and just plain out fun! A little hot though, 98 degrees in the shade. But the trail we rode ran along side Cave Run Lake, which we found our selves in cooling off before the end of the ride. My only reqrets is that we live so far away, and don't get to this area but about once every 3 years. Next trip, I'll plan on staying a little longer, and hopefully a little later in the fall.

Great track for a short ride, rocks, roots are common. Nice ride. You can get nice air over by the power wires which run over the trail about 4 and a half miles in. Horses are common on the weekends. Some sandy soil and wet weather creeks. some logs over the trail right now. Overall awesome trail for a short sprint.

Connect up at Stoney Cove (the dam) ride up the gravel road and turn to the left or the right either way it'll make about an 8 mile ride.
