Lake Perry Bike Trail - Trail, Topeka, Kansas

Lake Perry Bike Trail - Trail, Topeka, Kansas

DESCRIPTION

There are several sections of trail. Most of it is built to skirt along the bluffs lining the lake. The bluffs are tree covered and strewn with rocks making for some technical sections. Full utilization of the bluffs make for some long climbs and descents (for Kansas). Fall and Winter riding are made interesting by the deep leaves. Several spots allow great views of the lake and surrounding countryside. Be sure to look for wildlife. Bald Eagles, wild Turkeys, Deer, Quail and Squirrels are a few animals you may encounter.

First time on this trail and it is awesome! If you live close to Lake Perry and ride trails then do this ride, you won't regret it. Something for everyone and you can get off at several places that take you back to the trailhead. Well marked and easy to follow trails. I rode with a good friend and we had the whole park to our selves, no one was around. I'll be back at least once a week. A great workout so bring water and a spare tube just in case. I think it is a little bit harder than Clinton Lake and not quite as technical as Clinton Lake. The spiderwebs were tough but the weather was perfect. Thanks to all the volunteers that make this happen and the Ks Trails Council.

We did the outside loop and it took over 2 hours of steady riding.

A stacked loop trail system (11-12mi) with an 'out & back' loop of around the same length.

Approx. 75' of elevation difference between highest and lowest points on the trail. Soils are fairly thin and drain well, more silt than sand, quite erodable. Trail is well-maintained and even had some of the leaves blown off this fall!

Skill levels vary from section to section but I've found them to be well-labeled. Rocks and roots are common. Fast flowy sections are interspersed between some very challenging rock gardens, climbs and descents. It's a very well-designed system.

Customer Service

This trail can be as long or short as you want to make it. There are maps at the trailhead and the trail itself is well-marked. Difficulty ratings are for technical trail difficulty only, in my opinion.

Skyline is the main loop that all the others branch off of. A good "easy" route could be skyline > willow's loop > skyline > knothead > skyline > back to trailhead > skyline > wild west (7 mi), with knothead and wild west being 'intermediate' trails.

Mad mile and great white both deserve their rating, with great white being noticeably more difficult.

My opinion is the "out & back" starting with blackfoot is the most difficult part of the trail. Worth the effort.

My friends and I have friendly disagreements about difficulty/fun/best/etc between Perry and Clinton. My vote always goes to Perry, by the way.

Living in this area is great for mountain biking except when it's been raining. Plenty of good trails and diversity. Local outdoors-oriented people in the KC-MO region are somewhat rare, but the ones I've met have been great. Keeps the trails from getting crowded!

I've wanted to ride this trail for the last two years and finally took advantage while taking a Thanksgiving vacation with the folks in Lawrence. I'm an all mountain rider living on the Front Range of Colorado and from that perspective still found the trail physically demanding and technically challenging in parts. The trail system is mostly very narrow and windy taking advantage of the natural rock formations, valleys and hill slopes. I'm not sure of the total distance but it feels like a well earned 20 miles doing a full outer loop. The trails are designed very well and appear to be sustainable and very well maintained by a local rider(s) that must work very hard on the system. Thanks for that. This trail has become one of my all time favorites and a great excuse to take a break from the parents. Oh, and by the way one of my friends from Colorado broke his frame on the ride. Cool.

Customer Service

From the trailhead we did the full outer loop. Stay right and you can't go wrong.

Clinton is very similar but with an extra credit skills course at the end. Kill Creek is also a rocky and windy system that's worth while.

Really love this trail. Moved to KS last year from Tuscon. The 5 mile loop leading out of parking lot that is used for local XC racing and is very fast. The other 15 miles of trail are for real trail riders that like technical single track. Plenty of climbing. No real big drops but the tread has lots of rocks that keep things "interesting". I never get bored of this trail. It is over 20 miles long and can be ridden in any direction with lots of options. It is well marked and if you do get in over your head it is easy to short cut out of the trail system and get back to the parking lot. There is also a neat (unofficial) beach along Logan's Run where you can take a dip if things get too hot.

Customer Service

Just go and ride.

Smartly laid out trail that has two things you don't see often in Kansas: exposure and switchbacks. Mostly rocky, hilly singletrack. Technical enough to keep experienced riders interested, but decent introdution to technical riding for a novice if you don't mind pushing your bike occasionally. Navigation is pretty easy with a map (available at trailhead), but trail intersections aren't always well marked, so don't be surprised if you miss a few turns.

Loved this trail system!! Rode Skyline, MadMile, and Wild West. Didn't get a chance to ride Logan's Run or the other longer trails due to time constraints, but I will be back to check them out at a later date, guaran-damn-teed!!!

This is probably the best trail in Kansas. Decent climbs, fairly technical but overall just fun to ride.

Customer Service

All of it is good. For short and intense go Skyline to Wildwest, Great White or Mad Mile. For longer rides head out along blackfoot, Twin Peaks, Coppperhead and Logans Run.

The scenery is excellent and the trails are well maintained and marked and maps are available at the trailhead. As a parent whose oldest child wants to learn to ride with mom and dad, Lake Perry has a excellent 1/4 mile trail near the trailhead built especially for children and beginners to work on their basic skills.

I like this trail, I have been to Lawrence, Dornwood in Topeka, and at the park in Kansas City. It is much more technical then the other trails, I am a pretty aggressive rider, and I fly through this trail, but its a nice path to take for more reasons then one.

One of my favorite rides in Kansas. Probably the only trail in the state which provides long climbs and descents. The trails have enough rocks to offer some technical challenge. Only beginners will struggle though. Definitely a trail to test your skills and endurance with. Every time out I have encountered major wildlife views.

Customer Service

Easy to get to from Highway 24.
