School Creek Park (Milford ORV) - Trail, Junction City, Kansas

School Creek Park (Milford ORV) - Trail, Junction City, Kansas

DESCRIPTION

This is probably one of the biggest area's around to bike. Unfortanetly, this is mostly a ATV/motorcycle area so caution is needed when riding here. I generally go early (8-9 am) on the weekends and can usually get a couple of hours before the motorcycle guys take over. It also helps if it isn't that nice out (cold, overcast or rainy). If it is very crowded, the east side (right hand side when you drive in) generally doesn't have many bikers. This place has it all- drop-ins, steep climbs and descents as well as good cross-country. The best part- it is all single-track! Terrain varies from packed dirt to rockey. This is the best place I have ridden in Kansas, mostly because it has the most extreme terrain. Both sides of the ORV area are great. Trails spider out at every turn so there are limitless combinations to take. Enjoy!

I work the the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers out at Milford Lake and we are making some changes to the School Creek ORV Area and we are trying to get the word out as much as possible. As of July 5th, 2005, there will be no more camping in the ORV area. The park will officially become a day use park with hours of operation from 8am to 10pm. Second, a helmet law will be required for all ages of riders. Third, alcohol will not be prohibited in park. Hopefully, taking these actions will reduce the number of accidents, injuries and fatalities that have substantially risen over the years. We want to continue providing a safe place to enjoy the outdoors while increasing public safety, reducing accidents, and avoid closing the area. These new rules are in cooperation with local riders, Geary County EMS, Geary County Sheriff's Dept., and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Over the next several months, the Corps of Engineers will be developing a management plan for the School Creek ORV area. If anyone is interested in becoming a member of the School Creek ORV Stakeholders group, please contact the Corps of Engineers. Milford Project Office 4020 W. this trail is awesome. i have ridden for 2 hours and not repeated a trail. the network of trails vary between small climbs and downhill sections with some very fast single track areas. the trails are very well defined, just look out for motorcycles. if you go early in the morning, there usually are no motorcycles out there. for the manhattan and juction city area, this is as good as it gets.

Customer Service

go on the south east side (right side as you drive in). go down the path to the end and begin playing on an endless network of trails.

O.K. This park is pretty cool. It's not exactly what I would call single track (ATV type vehicles utilize these trails, so they're more like a small double track). My only suggestions are as follows:
1. Try to get out there on a weekday morning to avoid the "ORV's" These guys can be really dangerous.

2. Make sure you take plenty of water, gatorade, etc. This place is in the middle of nowhere.

3. Try not to show up right after it rains. The mud here is really thick, almost clay-like. Got so bad on me one day that I pulled the killer endo from the mud building up between the fork and the tire. (Aren't these wildgrippers supposed to "shed" mud???)

4. Don't ride here during deer hunting season. Common sense prevails.

Overall, I would rate these trail as a 4 tire thingys due to the inherent danger of getting clipped by some nine year old kid on his expensive little YZ-whatever that his mommy and daddy bought for him. Oh, yeah, and the mud kinda sucks too.

Take I70 west, past J.C., to the Chapman exit. (It's the one after the Milford Lk Rd exit. Go right at the end of the exit ramp. Drive until you can't go forward anymore (about 20 miles) and take a right at that stop sign. Keep driving until you see the signs for School Creek ORV Park. It's easier to get to than it sounds.

There's a trailhead just up the road from the Super8 motel in J.C. (toward the direction of the bridge) It looks to be an old ATV trail that nobody rides or maintains anymore- slowly but surely turning into singletrack. It actually leads back to an old landfill. These trails aren't extremely long, but have the feeling of a dual slalom or bmx type course. There's even a couple of cool little jumps! Yeeeeeee Haaaaaa! Pretty fast with tight turns and hard packed soil. Park at the Super 8 and head for the bridge (toward the freeway) and look for the trailhead. E-mail me if you can't find it.

This place has somewhat of a fun factor because you can explore for hours and not ride the same place once or try to find your way back to the parking lot. However, this place offers no real technical riding for bikes unless you can ride up 30 ft dirt walls. I rode this place looking for jumps or something actually interesting and found only singletrack, no jumps or real drop-offs. This place is good for a long riding workout. Your riding skills will not be tested here. If it wasn't for the motorized riders I'd say bring the family along for a spin!

Customer Service

Same as other directions. When you get lost, go to the info center, these people are nice and will show you how to really get there.

If your a freestyler looking for some natural terrain jumps that are extremely tricky, School Creek has endless possibilities. I have been riding here on my tricked out CR250 Honda and it does some interesting things on the big cliff faces and other cool natural terrain jumps. Definately the place to go if you are looking to show off some skills. This place is really anyones type of area to ride with many differant styles of riding techniques.

2 miles west and 1 1/2 miles south of the School Creek exit to the highway is my freestyle compound with some huge jumps, steel ramps, and natural terrain stuff. It has been said by many people that this is one of the best places to go to jump and do tricks arround.
