Gunn Park Trail - Trail, Fort Scott, Kansas

Gunn Park Trail - Trail, Fort Scott, Kansas

DESCRIPTION

Single track down through woods to Gunn Park. All flat with no rocks or roots. Not very many know about this trail that has been here for the past 10 years, so I am sharing its secret location. There are 2 entry points and 1 exit for now. Trail is shared by horse back riders, and gets grown over quickly in the summer months. It is very rideable from about sept to may. There is a river close by so it does flood occasionally. I also see a lot of wild life on this trail. You will wind up in Gunn Park where you have to find your own way across the creeks, since there have not been any bridges built...yet. Once you are on the main trail, there are a lot of branching trails, but they all wind up at the same place.

Rode this trail two weeks ago and was very impressed with what I found. While not technical in the truest sense, it definitely should be taken seriously. The section called "Dragoon Slayer" requires your line/cut to be pretty precise or you might careen over the edge and straight down 18-20 feet. Quite a few skinny sections and off camber areas too. Thankfully, I was warned about these by a gentleman who helped build this section. Be warned that clip ins are not advised on this section for the above noted reasons. Over all, I enjoyed this trail.

Customer Service

I rode counter clockwise as suggested by another bike site. This route lets you enjoy going down hill on the Dragoon Slayer portion.

Gunn Park Trails has been redeveloped over the past few years and now includes approximately seven miles of well groomed singletrack trail, with fast flowing areas near the river, and more challenging switchback climbs away from the river. Considered by many as some of the best trails in Kansas. Not terribly technical, but challenging enough to keep your attention.

Although several trailheads access the network, the main trailhead is directly north of the park entrance, at the Gunn Park Trail sign. Maps are located in the mailbox, and the trail generally runs counter-clockwise all the way around the park, except riding backwards/clockwise is fun and changes the lines.

7/28/11 Lots of works and updates since the initial posting about this trail. Currently about 3 miles of single track kept in excellent condition. Includes a loop from the main entrance of Gunn Park to 4th Street with a brand new return trail a mile in length back to Gunn Park along the river. Smooth fast and fun. Only one climb / descent near the entrance of the north trails. South trails are a little slower and more technical. Immediate plans to connect both north and south trails combining all for an eventual 5 to 6 mile loop. Forecasting much of this will be complete by winter. Search for Gunn Park Trails and friend us on Facebook for updates on rides and work days.
