French Lick - Trail, French Lick, Indiana

French Lick - Trail, French Lick, Indiana

DESCRIPTION

It's a 6+ mile trail that climbs to the top of the West Side of Mt Airie. With more elevation than Hesitation Point, Alex Stewart built a trail with his signature flow. The tread is easy, and the grades are kept at 5%, so beginner riders will be at home. Advanced riders will finish the climb a bit faster. When they open up on the descent, they will find Alex's rewards for speed.

There is a second intermediate loop now open. See this GPS track for reference. I'll refer to the loop that starts at the bottom of the hill (main trailhead) as the "main loop" and the loop that is near the North end of the main loop as the "intermediate loop".

The best way to take the trail is to ride the main loop clockwise. Riding it clockwise puts you in the tighter, more technical sections on the uphill and open fast sections on the downhill. Pass up the first intersection to the intermediate loop (branches to the left). You will come to a 180 degree curve on the main trail where the at the intermediate loop also connects. Take the intermediate loop here (branch left)and you will be riding it counter clockwise. This gives you a great downhill that is somewhat technical, fast and with several opportunities to get air if you choose. You will then be faced with a pretty good climb to get back to the top where it reconnects with the main trail (you passed this earlier). Turn left and finish out the climb to the top of the main trail. You are then rewarded with an approximately two mile long fast and fun downhill that will leave you ready to do it again. Adding the intermediate loop makes the total trip around 12 miles with about 1500 feet of climbing total. (the two loops may be longer than 12 miles, my GPS always reads low under tree cover). Intermediate riders will want to do two laps. Advanced riders might like to go three.

These downhills are longer and faster than those at Brown County. The trail at French Lick is shorter and with less variety than Brown County but I'm looking forward to going back.

Great trail, I have been riding for ten years and the mountain bike scean in Indiana just keeps getting better. The trail consist of two loops totaling approximately 9 mile. With more to possibly coming. Has just about every type trail you can think of from single track to some double wide. It has creek crosings, rocky trail to butter smooth Trails in Pine trees. Bountiful in scenery and the fun factor.

Good mix of technical and flowing downhill. The trails were designed by Alex Stewart who designed the Brown County Trails. Uphills are not too steep and the downhills are long, fast and flowing.

The French Lick Casino golf pro shop allows riders to shower in their facility which is a plus for the ride home.

I included most of the pertinent information in the trail description.
