Wapehani - Trail, Bloomington, Indiana

Wapehani - Trail, Bloomington, Indiana

DESCRIPTION

A very awesome trail, that is pretty much technical. Lots of good downhills through the woods, some nice jumps, beautiful scenery around the lake, and overall some good heart-pumping trails. All the trails overall arent' that long, but it's a decent size maze of trails.

I really enjoy this trail. It's difficult in spots but makes me a better rider. Wonderful resource to the bloomington indiana community.

The reviews on here are a little out of date, so I thought I'd write an update.

In the last couple of years, a lot of work has been done in the park. What used to be a spaghetti bowl of trails is turning into a much nicer, flowier park. Many of the eroded fall line trails have been replaced with sustainable trails that link up well with many trails.

This park has trails for all levels of riders. There are easy, flat-ish trails for beginners, and some more technical sections and features for more advanced riders. There is nothing too technical, though. Some somewhat steep climbs, but nothing too extreme.

This park is just outside of downtown, so it is my go to weekday ride. It's awesome to have a place to mountain bike just minutes away from my house. Being so close to town, however, means that there are a fair amount of park users. Keep an eye out for hikers, trail runners, dog walkers, fishers,

There are a bunch of trail combinations, and so it can take a little while to learn your way around.

If it's your first time at the park, I recommend going down the gravel road that leaves the parking lot. This will take you to a .5 mile trail that circles the pond at the center of the park. Do a quick lap around this pond -- most of the tails in the park will eventually bring you back to the pond, so it's a good way to get your bearings. There is also a map at the information kiosk in the parking lot.

The longest route I've been able to find without repeating any trail segments is about 4.5 miles. If you leave the parking lot on the trail that starts in the NE corner and make all lefts, you'll do a nice, ~3.5 mile lap around the outside of the whole park.

If you're coming from the downtown area, it's possible to hop on Bloomington's rail-to-trail network, which is a combination of paved and gravel trail. Go south on the B-Line Trail and then continue northwest on the Clear Creek Trail. At the end of Clear Creek, cross Tapp Road and ride north for ~.5 mile on Weimer Road. Wapehani is at the top of the first hill. It's about 7 miles from downtown Bloomington to the park.

Good trail with lots of climbs and technical characteristics. There are alot of roots and things in the way so you are always on your toes. Gets your heart rate going to I'm usually burnt out after an hour of riding. Well maintained and good for a weeknight ride.

Thought I would post a quick note to let everyone know that the development planned on this property does not seem to be happening. Trail is in great shape.

Best trail in Indiana. Excellent single track with moderate level of technical aspects. Provides enough but not too much mud when rainy. Doesn't seem to be maintained, however. And I find that I have to cover some trails twice to get in a good workout.

Customer Service

Take entrance at South end of gravel lot (big wide downhill) and stay to the right until get to the lake. Curve left around the lake and the any combo of trails will give a great workout.

the "Wap" rules. or atleast it used to...the new trail supervisor has been removing rocks, flattening fun sections and cutting logs out of the trail (ones that have been there since the beginning) and generally making the place way too easy. my buds and i have nick-named it disneyland. don't get me wrong, its a great place to ride and has some smokin' short downhills...but by making it less technical, it can only get worse.

I thought that the wap was a real fun ride. technical climbs and a great downhill with a nice jump in the middle. In a earlier review a guy send that they were removing rocks and logs and all of the things that make a trail fun to ride. release the hounds on this nimrod if I want to ride my rode bike I will go for a road ride. All terrian bicycle means all terrians including rocks and logs and whatever else happens to be on the trail

This park make excellent use of the land available. There are good climbs, wide, fast track and plenty of single track. Beginners to experts will find parts of the park that will challenge their skills. Kudos to the Bloomington parks Dept for keeping the park in good shape.

It's not an epic, but it's fun. Fairly technical with a lot of roots and sharp corners. A couple of steep climbs and switchback downhills. Some jumps and drop-offs too. And a stream crossing.

You can get about 5-7 miles before you start repeating stuff. They hold races here too and I'd ride that route if I knew what it was. I usually start on the north (by the parking lot entrance) and work my way around and come back up on the wide gravel hill.
