Silver Lake Trail - Trail, Highland, Illinois

Silver Lake Trail - Trail, Highland, Illinois

DESCRIPTION

A lot of bridges and small creeks. A few steep uphills, but mostly just short uphills then downhills. The trail mostly follows the lake. Great for people just learning to ride, because it has a little of everything.

This trail had a lot more to offer than even expected. There are some quick downhills and sharp turns, lots of bridges to run over. Other than being a bit mucky due to all the wetness this time of year (and associated lack of rider to beat the brush back) . . this was a great ride. We were huckin it and houghing and puffing until we made it back. It's a bit of a key hole style trail, up and back on same path with a circle at the end. (I'm out of shape!)

One section (about 3/4 way to the turn) there is a good spot where too much speed or too little control will send you into the drink! Cheers.

I will definitely hit it again.

Fun place to take a beginner, good place to go if you don't have all day.

Since noone has reviewed this trail in 5 years, I'll update the best I can. The parks people take good care of this trail but it has seen a lot of storm damage since this time last year. The singletrack is fast and flowy, not too technical and not a big climb in either direction. This place has a lot of bridges that seem to be about two feet short in places because a mud pie waits at the end. The water is nothing you would want to find yourself in after a hot day. NO swimming allowed.

I usually park at the entrance to the park and ride the street to the trailhead, do the lollipop and go straight across the spillway from the boat loading dock to the water treatment plant building and up the hill in the grass back to my car for a total of 6miles. Takes about 40 minutes.

The trail is a "work in progress" trail and is expected to be continuously upgraded annually. As Director of Parks & Recreation for the City, it is my intention to making this a great workout trail, yet keeping it a trail for hiking, trail running and/or family walks. It is 4.5 miles, but with the loop one can expand it to as many miles as one can handle. From the loop, it is just under 2 miles from the trail head. Call 618.651.1386 for additional information.

The trail follows the fingers of Silver Lake as stated in the previous review. It has many bridges and swampy areas where creeks/ditches feed into the lake. It is an out and back style with a loop at the north end. I would rate the trail as beginner level. There are no real difficult areas on it. The most difficult part is the many tight corners, which tend to keep the speed down. Some of the uphills are tough also because it's difficult to carry any momentum into them. If you push it, this trail will definitely give you a workout with all the acceleration and deceleration. This trail is great for a beginner but can also give an intermediate level rider a good ride.

Good Sunday morning mountain bike fitness trail. Southern Illinois needs more trials like this one. I rode the 4.5 (approx) mile out and back trail with a loop at the turn around point. I'll rate it as a well built beginner/intermediate level trail with great views of the lake. I wish the trail I rode was longer but there may be trails in the park that I haven't found yet.

Its a great trail for a hour to hour and a half ride. Fallows the lake(previously stated) and crosses it alot. Watch out on the bridges, on the first little one it was wet and i flew off and landed hard on my back and it knocked the wind out of me really hard

Tight, twisty singletrack over rolling terrain. Not too technical, but still alot of fun. More bridges than I've seen anywhere else.Ride the loop both ways to extend your ride time or ride everything twice for a real nice workout. This trail can be as easy or as hard as you choose depending on how fast you ride it.Well designed and very well maintained. Great job to Mark Rosen and whoever else helped build this trail.

Well about the 3 mile mark somehow I got on the trail backwards?! Anyway a 3.5 miler turned into about 5--no biggie as I'm used to doing 8 to 10 mile loops. The 5 mile route took me 40 minutes.

There's a lot of wooden plank bridges--some travel over smaller "ditches"--some need work (in disrepair).
Lot's of loose limbs and small debris on the trail which is gonna cost a broken spoke and a truing.

No biggie--all in all a fun loop. And it's probably the only suitable mtb loop for miles around I bet.
No climbs to speak of until mile marker 2.

Every year when I come through Highland I'll be sure to give it a spin.

Just an update that the trail has gotten a few upgrades this past summer. Two new bridges were put in and some of the pointy stubs from trees were removed. The Parks & Rec. Dept. is still aware that there needs to be one more bridge improvement to make this a really good trail and will attempt to do that this fall, otherwise, who knows.
