Gander Mountain Forest Preserve - TRAIL

Gander Mountain Forest Preserve - Trail, Fox Lake, Illinois

Very interesting area to bike. There is a nice steep climb littered with ruts, roots, and loose soil to get to the top of Lake County's highest point (957 feet above sea level). After that there are quite a few areas of singletrack. There are a few very steep downhill runs but they veer off public property and are not open to bikers. Go out and explore, there's quite a bit to play on.

Getting any organization to think cycling isn't just about thrashing about and tearing apart is tough. Keeping up on making that place fun and maintaining a ghost status isn't very enjoyable. Just being friendly while you're there to maintain the brush back off the trail i think would be to have the best relationship with hikers and any wardens you come across.

Overall for a quick rush of adrenaline its worth the workout.

awesome trails! lots of local bikers keep up the singletrack with log jumps, chopping weeds, and cleaning up. There are a few downhills that are the most adrenalizing trails for 100 miles. If you go on a day when this place is empty, it is incredible.

It only gets 3's in as is condition. But with a little work this could easily be 5's!!

An area with an incredible amount of potential. This is a reclaimed gravel/strip mining area combined with the natural highest peak in northeastern Illinois. This creates a fantastic array of varied terrain that is, or could be, similar to or even surpass the fun factor of the Kettles. There is a potential for miles of flowing, undulating, single track climbing in and out kettles through well spaced 2nd growth hardwood timber. Fast loops through rolling tall grass praire at the front of the trails.

Further this could be developed into a bastion for gravity junkies, with steep rugged descents available from the peak of Gander to the deep kettles surrounding its base.

However, this will all take ADVOCACY on all our part so that these system can be built. Due to the rocky/sandy nature of the soil erosion could be a big problem therefore

NOTE:
Parking is sparse and cramped, Please respect the trails, hikers, and wardens of the park. We must make friends with these people, not enemies.

Technically an up and back on the main fire road. However there are various "other" routes (wink) that can be found as off shoots. However as noted previously, these are not legal single track trails and are "intended" for hiking (though they look to be mysteriously maintained by ghost cyclists). It is advisable to walk these trails just to see the potential of what could be!

This place has a lot of potential if the dnr would make the trails legal. Time to start lobbying to get something done about it. There is technically NO legal singletrack according to the signs. You have to stay on the old tractor roads. It is pretty challenging flying down the hill and the climb up is a fine workout the 3rd time up. I still dont know if it is legal to go up to the top of the hill and enjoy the view but I plan on finding out. Getting involved, connected and learning through BIKE CLUB OF LAKE COUNTY. (BCLC) check them out!

This place has crazy dh singletrack, but signs are posted that you should not be riding on anything but the fireroad. From the turn around you can either take the fireroad or find the singletrack out to the top. The singletrack will take you through a field and up a quick climb. Be careful it doesn't seem like anybody does any trail maintaince so weeds stick out on the trail and trees that fall won't be clear. I have found about 5 different trails down. There's a trail at the bottom that leads to Wilmont Ski Hill, great place to bomb down. Be careful it is private property. Wilmont is suppose to be a bike park but the better riding is on Gander. This place is just a big hill. The downhill is tough, its worth checking out, but there's only short xc loops.

This is a good place to ride if your training for racing or trying to get in shape. Its a fun downhill run with a lot of washouts and loose gravel. You can get a lot of speed but watch out for fallen trees and huge rocks. The climb back up is killer that will make the climbs at Kettle seem short and easy. I go here when the trails are thawing out in Ill and Wis in the spring to get in shape cuz its always in good condition. I recommend it for people close by. (its only 4 miles with one short XC loop)

THIS PLACE SUCKS.....THE DNR PATROLS THIS PLACE WITH A FAIR AMOUNT OF REGULARITY. WHAT THE OTHER REVIEWS NEGLECT TO MENTION IS THAT IN REALITY THERE IS REALLY ONLY ABOUT 1.5 mi. IN LEGAL RIDEABLE TRAILS. tHE REST ARE ALL PRIVATE PROPERTY AND PIRATED TRAILS. THIS MEANS THAT IF THE DNR CATCHES YOU OUT ON THESE OTHER TRAILS (for lake of a better statement) YOUR ASS IS GRASS!!! I WAS RIDING OUT OF BOUNDS WITH A BUDDY OF MINE A WEEK OR SO AGO, AND THE DNR WAITED AT THE END OF THE TRAIL AND GAVE EACH OF US A $200 TICKET. WHILE THE RIDE WAS OK AT BEST, I WOUOLD MUCH RATHER SPEND THAT $200 ON GAS TO GET UP TO THE KETTLE MORAINE (a legal park in southeastern WIS.) SO, WHILE THE RIDING ON THE TRAILS, EVEN THE ILLEGAL ONES, IS OK AT BEST, I WOULD HIGHLY SUDGEST RIDING ELSE WHERE.

Customer Service

NONE,
I'M NOT JUST BEING NEGATIVE, READ WHY BELOW!!

Similar Products Used: TRUST ME THE KETTLE MORAINE IS A MUCH BETTER BET AND ONLY ABOUT A 30 min DRIVE FROM THIS PLACE. PLUS IT IS LEGAL TO RIDE THERE.
