Broken Seat Trail - Trail, Chicago, Illinois

Broken Seat Trail - Trail, Chicago, Illinois

DESCRIPTION

Nothing too fancy, but the best real dirt trails inside city limits that I have found so far. A couple trees to hop over, nice packed dirt that turns into snot after rains (parts can flood after big rains). As you go more or less north, you will run into Cicero Avenue. Cross the street and keep going. These trails cross some METRA tracks and another residential street. After riding for a little while, trail opens up with a dirt bowl with some nice big jumps. Trail ends when you pop out of the woods into another city park. The North Branch trail is nearby, but I don't know how to give directions there... These trails are fun and you can end up with some scratches on you and your bike if you're being really dumb, but nothing really technical. I've seen deer probably every other time I have ridden there.

I ride here a lot, it is okay, better than riding on the road. We built dirt jumps there but they kept getting knocked down then our shovels got stolen, it was pretty cool until people went and wrecked it!

This is actually part of the North Branch FP district system. The trails mentioned go all the way from Central Ave. to LaBagh Woods near Foster and Pulaski. The total mileage is maybe 4-5 miles. The trails are nothing special compared to Palos or Deer Grove but there are some quick little hills and some tight turns. Lots of high school kids back in woods so expect glass on the trail... There are some BMX style jumps which makes things fun.

I use this system to train on my cyclocross bike. If you ever see a guy on an orange bike with drop bars that would be me...

Its awiiight.
Trails not marked, in disrepair, generally strew with broken glass, beer bottles, and discarded porno mags.
Shady, molester-like dudes wandering around.
However, there are a couple pretty good streches, and if you don't act snobby about it, not that bad of a ride. Some alright hills, logs, etc...
Good if you don't feel like driving 40 miles to ride.

(from central chicago)
north on pulaski,
west on foster. Make a right into first entrance for forest preserve. Ride through park to the river. Small trail there. You can cross the tracks to get to the majority of trails.
