Buckskin Morgan to Hawley Gulch - Trail, Idaho Falls, Idaho

Buckskin Morgan to Hawley Gulch - Trail, Idaho Falls, Idaho

DESCRIPTION

The first mile is rolling single track for 1.5 miles. At the fire road turn right and wind your way down the hill until you hit the main road. Pedal south approximately 400 feet to another unmarked trailhead on your left. This trail takes off up a short hill and then rolls you through a mile of superb trail. At the bottom bunny-hop the wooden bridge and proceed up a short hill and veer south. This is called Hawley Gulch. The trail starts above the drainage (the bottom is typically muddy until July) on a fireroad that gradually turns to a trail. This is a downhill run of almost 2 miles to Tablerock Campground. The main trail takes you directly to the campground or there are a couple of trails off to the right that will take you back to a road. (If you take these trails, turn right on the road and pedal uphill to the car.) From the campground turn right up the road until you get to the car. This trail is fairly popular and well used.

Great trail! This trail is a must ride for anyone visiting southeast Idaho. This trail has something for everyone, just long enough to get you tired but not too long for a sunset ride. Lots of singletrack, climbing, fast descents, and beutiful scenery. This is part of racing course, but all the local shop riders know it like the back of their hand.

Hawley Gulch is a great downhill single track. Be on the lookout for others (hikers or crotch rockets) coming up the trail. It is used quite a bit, especially on weekends.

Chris gives a good description, except for one important update. Mid way in the ride; when He (or is it she?)recommends "turning right on the main dirt road and going a couple hundred feet" don't do it because the next trail has been closed by the FS. It is not an official trail, they want to stop the erosion so they have eerected a barrier to this trail at the main road.

There are two variations to this route. One follows the old race loop, and the other descends straight into Hawleys Gulch. Both are a lot of fun. The scenary on top of Buckskin Morgan Ridge is amazing! Lots of vegatation and wildlife. The single track, dropping into the Gulch is a blast!

Good descriptions. During the spring time a lot of foilage grows in covering up some of the earlier trails. Watch for signs giving trail descriptions. You can also go to any of the local bike shops and find a series of maps called "On Trail" these are inexspensive portable maps giving a lot of detail for the area.
