Pine Creek Divide / Thorn Creek Butte Trail - TRAIL

Pine Creek Divide / Thorn Creek Butte Trail - Trail, Idaho City, Idaho

Yet another sweet motorcycle trail. If you've ridden BANNOCK CREEK DIVIDE and you liked it, you're going to love this one. Again, banked turns, roller coaster bumps and plenty of technical surprises to keep you focused. After starting your descent, you will hit your first road in about 3-3 1/2 miles. Cross it and continue down to the next road. If you cross it and continue on trail, be sure to turn right a little further down to bring you back up to the main trail. If you choose to skip the down and up, just turn right on this second road and ride 1/4 mile or less until you pick up the trail coming up and crossing the road to your right. Get back on and soon encounter a massive downed tree on the trail. Go around and continue. Cross the next road and have some fun. In the saddle a little further, cross the next road and shoot up the last major grunt (short.) In a couple miles (or less) the trail, on the ridge now, will dump you onto a road, but immediately you will pick up the trail on your right and continue back onto the ridge. Further on, you will find yourself on a road again. Immediately you will have the option of going right and down on a sweet looking single track in much darker volcanic soils. Don't do it this time. Stay on the road another 100 feet and pick up the ridge again and continue down. One more decision coming at you real soon: trails going left and right. Take the one on the right as it immediately drops down and to the right and around either side of a tree. Soon you will be in dark volcanic soils and rocks (not light granites). You are close to the bottom, and if you pick wisely from any options, you will come out within 100 yards of your car.

This ride rocks: possibly the best in the area (including Boise foothills and Bogus.) Between this ride and the BANNOCK RIDGE DIVIDE ride, you can appreciate what backcountry riding is all about. These rides are in the trees and mostly follow their respective ridges down. Lots of varied terrain with minimal roots and rocks. The fact that you ascend through the bottom of Bannock Creek, you get a laid back warm-up/approach to start off. After 4 1/2 miles, you leave the creek bottom and ascend on road 203 the rest of the way. This road is in very good repair, which is in your favor as you will now put an additional 1600 feet of vertical under you as you breeze (heh, heh) up to the top.
