Waimea Canyon - Trail, Waimea, Hawaii

Waimea Canyon - Trail, Waimea, Hawaii

DESCRIPTION

Having lived in Kauai only for a few months these trails are so far the most fun I've found. They're not real long. Only about 3 miles one way,but it's all twisty singletrack clinging to the edge of the canyon.

This is a great trail for downhill runs. Offers lots of versatile forms of drops, wooden walkways through trees, great cliff drops, huge kickers on single tracks, ditch jumps, ridge lines and roller coaster sections that are so fun it reminded me of P-Rim in Utah!! I just installed some 4x10 planks spanning 16ft deep ditch runs that is great for technicals. Like others have stated this trail is frowned on by the DLNR for mountain bike use, mostly because hunters have complained we scare their wildlife away, so please be respectful of local traffic. Try to stay out of site.

Customer Service

same as stated, only going higher up to the trail head at the Kukui Hiking trail head affords you a lot more technical stuff, upper intermediate.

This "trail" isn't exactly legal. It's not illegal but there isn't any recognized legal status either. We are able to ride there because we keep a low profile and don't give them any reason to kick us out. If you are new or a visitor keep this in mind and be very respectful to other user groups, particularly the hunters and motorcycle riders. They built and maintain the trails so don't give them a reason to complain about mountain bikers. Also, some of the motorcycle guys also do a little DH on the trail so keep an extra carefull eye out for them. I would personally recommend riding the trails between Kealia beach and Anahola on the east side for most of the visitors, the trails are way better and far less chance of unknowingly sparking a user conflict.

DO NOT ride this trail into Waimea Canyon State Park -- it is illegal to do so. You'll know you've gone "too far" when you see the "NO OFF-ROAD BIKES" sign. Also, watch out for hikers, horseback riders, motocycles and bow-hunters since they all use the same trail. Be aware that mountain bikes are prohibited on ALL trails in Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Parks... the only legal rides are this one (below the entrance to the State Park) and lots of Jeep roads which are well marked.

I was out here on my honeymoon in October and saw a couple bikers head down from the lookut point and my wife and I hiked this trail and it looks very nice, not technical but it weems you can probably do other trails around this area. The scenery alone is breathtaking.

Customer Service
