Athens 441 Trail - Trail, Athens, Georgia

Athens 441 Trail - Trail, Athens, Georgia

DESCRIPTION

Not much in the way of big hills but highly technical with tons of 3-5 dropoffs, sharp switchbacks, tight trails, tough rock gardens and one very nice 20-25 foot drop-in. I have only ridden the first two sections (about 6 miles) but there is more along the power lines, I am told. Definitely not for beginners although a good place to hone technical skills. One section has 5 3-5 foot dropoffs in a row and is quite an entertaining little series of jump opportunities/break your bike and neck opportunities. Not much room to build up speed and a few rock gardens and vertical uphill spots that only a select few can conquer without dabbing a toe or two. I got a stick in the eye, stabbed in the leg with my own skewer, and nearly lost my lunch. It was awesome.

This trail is still here, it is just a little hard to find. If you take the loop, it is exit 12 towards Commerce and will be on the right side about a mile past the loop. You can start at the gas station that is across the street from the bulldog inn or there is a little dirt parking lot a little farther on the right. It is a great trail and I have been doing a little maintenance, so it is ready to ride.

This is a great little trail. It's hard to follow and has been cut up into 4 sections by developement, but it is there. The map is wrong. The trail is on the north side of Athens..... 441 North

Went out there tonight. Could not find the trail, anywhere. There has been major construction in that area, so possibly, it does not exist anymore.

I traveled Timothy Road at least three times, looking for any gas station at all but had no luck, whatsoever. There are NO gas stations within several miles of the intersection. The map shows the trailhead beginning just northeast of Autumnwood Trail. There are nothing but houses in the location shown.

Very frustrating.

Ridden this trail many times through the past months. There has been lots of work on the second leg. "the bowl" now has a RIDICULOUS ramp about 25-30 feet off the bottom. there is also a new dropin and 2 new jumps. In general it seems very well ridden, and aside from a few logs is much better kept than it was last summer.

park at greenway on MLK blvd and pedal around to gate by grainger. go thru gate and your on sandy creek dr. go across rode and enter trail take left trail at fork then you will see cut thru on left thru kudzoo field and then at end go across to power lines which is second part then go back up power lines to third part. real easy thats why you have to go twice to figure it out. real easy to get lost on first time.

This is a messed up trail. Seriously, don't bother riding it. It's all in pieces and doesn't really flow that well. The 3-5 foot drops are deceptive.. you only get them going one way, plus the trail is so twisted up on itself you can't carry any speed anyways.
Just a note too.. Do NOT go into the kudzoo field unless you really know where you're going. Otherwise you will literally end up riding over a garbage dump,, and I nearly broke my ankle doing so.
The "Freeride park" sounds promising on this trail. I didn't make it back that far, but it would be worth taking a look at. I also didn't have my FR bike anyway. SO my only recommendation would be to skip the first part, meaning don't park at the gas station, but go down the next road on the right, and park down there somewhere and head back to the freeride stuff. Don't bother with the rest.

Customer Service

Just don't go into the kudzoo field. Skip the entire "first section" and go to the freeride stuff if anything.

a few corrections, its not dixie gas anymore, and its not 1 mile from the intersection of 441 and loop 10, its much less than that, about .25 mi, its the first gas station on your right if your coming from the intersection. park in that parking lot and the trailhead is in the front left corner of the parking lot if you are standing in front of the gas station on 441. there are four sections on this trail, but in the second section is the main event, this is going through the kudzoo field, and then accross the road, following that trail back for about 1.5 mi

Customer Service

in the second section (this is about 1 mile down the road from the gas station, take a right on the road and hten about .15 mi on left go down the trailhead), ride @ 1.5 mi back to "the bowl." this is a freeride park and the best in the area, it has a couple 20 foot drop ins. banked turns, and jumps. also, be creative, there is much more potential for this area than what has been done already, blaze your own trail but be mindful of erosion.

Theres been lots of damage to these trails due to the ice storm that we just had in town...A chainsaw is needed now more than ever! I live in the neighborhood by these trails, someone help me clean them up and we will go ride around for a bit. Hit me up... boss_kizzle@yahoo.com these trails can be badass, but its gonna take a bit of working to reclear them out....

Customer Service

From my house, go to the trailhead at the corner of Creek Hollow Way and (Creekstone dr?) theres a small trail that starts about 50 feet down from the corner, take it around back and follow...theres a 100' skinny thru the swamp, a huge uphill that i bet you cant make it up, a couple logpiles, and a logride i personally made, and a few rockpiles...take it to the end, and either go down the powerlines or take the trail backwards....ITS FAST when u ride it backwards...

I live in the neighborhood right by these trails. I have been removing fallen logs and branches etc, from some sections to make them ride better. However, there is one huge tree that has fallen across part of the trail that needs to be cut to make it rideable. If anyone in athens with a chainsaw wants to help out and make this trail 100% ridable get in touch with me at boss_kizzle@hotmai.com

Customer Service

Theres tons of ways you can ride these trails once all the loops are fully cleared and functional.

Well, I USED to ride this trail once a week until the maintenance people seemed to have forgotten about it this summer while I was away. But, if it ever becomes maintained again this is a very nice trail to have in town if you live in Athens or in the area. Like the last review said, bring a spare because some parts of the trail have glass and other goodies to get plenty of flats on. This one has 4 parts to it. The first and second are visibily connected while the 3rd and 4th ones are a little tougher to spot. I divide parts into separations by the road. The 3rd one can be reached by going across the road and up to your left, and the 4th can be reached by turning right on the road you come out on and entering on the left in the bushes. However, the 4th part is basically freeride with a little singletrack so I usually don't bother. Good for one time, though. Watch for cars on the connections of parts and ask the people that own the convenience store if you can park there or park at the greenway further towards town on the same road.
