Tom Brown (park) - TRAIL

Tom Brown (park) - Trail, Tallahassee, Florida

-> this is where many of the European mountain biking teams trained for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, because it was "harder and more technical" than the Olympic course!! Twisty turny, always eather going up or down a hill and around a corner.

I rode this trail last weekend for the first time since 1993. Wow, what a difference. The trail was like a roller coaster, with lots of twists and turns with berms throughout. There are no long steep climbs in either direction, but lots of undulating ups and downs. It is so hard packed and smooth you could probably literally ride most of it on an old Huffy 10 speed (none of your typical sugar sand or roots.) There were two really fun sections inside the main loop that were labeled as "expert". I am not sure why because they were not that difficult, and I am certainly no expert. The best section was a serpentine criss-crossing down a small ravine. It consisted of several easy table-top, double, and single jumps and even had some whoops. There were a couple of short "bridges" to play on and what looked like a shallow drainage ditch that was scattered with basketball sized rocks that looked like it would have been fun to try to navigate if i would have had more time. My only complaint is also a positive and that is that there were quite a few people on the trails. I was a little nervous I was going to run into someone on some of the higher speed blind curves. I guess the positive is there is plenty of assistance around if needed. Also, there is a bike wash station down by the playground. Overall I think this is one of the best trails I have ridden in Florida. PS- The park had a very busy disc golf course as well.

Customer Service

I only rode the main trail, which is well marked at the entrance and throughout. There is a map posted at the trail head, although it's not really necessary. I rode the trail both clockwise and counter clockwise and had a slight preference for clockwise (seemed to be more people riding clockwise); but either is great.

This trail has gotten a nice makeover since I last rode it. New signage and skinnies make the loop fun and challenging. The Cadillac trail has doubled in length due to a new trail that parallels the old trail making a nice loop. It too has some nice obstacles making it difficult riding but there are easier options. The trails across the lake aren't worth the effort (unless of course we were not on the correct loop, as there isn't much signage over there). Definitely worth the trip if you're used to flat sandy trails and the abundance of good restaurants makes for excellent post ride refueling.

Customer Service

Just follow the signs from the BMX track. They are numbered which is a nice touch.

Similar Products Used: The trails in Pensacola (my local trails) are nice and have improved a lot over the last year. It's not a mtb destination but if you're in the area you might as well hit it. Mobile is a good alternative. Oak Mountain and Swayback are awesome.

I wouldn't go as far as to rate this trail as extreme maybe intermediate. There were two challenge obstacles that were fun. These trails were well marked and very enjoyable to ride. If I were to travel down to the Tallahassee area, I would ride this trail again. I guess the aerobic level of this trail would just depend on how you rode the trails and what gear you have it in. It was my first ride in about a year because of a deployment to Iraq and it didn't kill me. Of course I was taking easier than I usually do.

These trails have something for everyone. The Magnolia/K9 loop is pretty flat and great for begginers. The Gun Range loop has a few short steep hills and a twisty section in the woods near Easterwood Drive. The Ravines loop is the toughest and it has some spots where begineers will want to dismount and go around. It has a nice log bridge engineered in the middle if the goat fence is not up. There is the flat, paved Goosepond Trail if that is your style. There is a also a dedicated BMX tracks with jumps. Other things to do in the park include various tennis and softball courts, disc golf courses, a RC car track, fishing ponds and a dog park.

Customer Service

A good map of all the trails in the park map can be found between disc golf course and the BMX track at the uphill side on the edge of the woods.

Kudos to the Rec Dept at Tom Brown! I travel the Southeast for work and always bring my bike. This is one of the BEST muni courses I have seen in the 10 SE states!! I see why the Europeans trained here! On some parts of the trail and just laughed and dismounted! Did not even try it on my first time through. this course is very tight and twisty compared to my N Ga courses I am used to. And they make the best of the lack of overall elevation changes. Still hard to get used to all the bugs in FLA, even in Dec. The 4 people I met on a Thursday late afternoon were very friendly and helpful. A definate stop on my next trip to the panhandle!!

Customer Service

I only got to cover the ones in tom brown park. there seem to be an adjoining park across a small bridge. Ride them all, they are quick and tight!

Pretty good trail. Has a combination of terrain types which is nice for novice riders (such as myself) as well as numerous hills to help wean such novices from the domestic hills to some of the bigger ones.

Customer Service

I drove 5hours to ride this for a race. I think it was worth it. This trail is on a nice wooded area with a big hill. This trail has the longest climb in Florida. Nice setup with tons of flow. There is nothing technical at all about this trail just nice mellow ridding. I enjoyed ridding here alot. Would recomend this trail to everyone.

I rode this trail a couple of times in the past month. I am just getting into the sport, and decided to explore the area on my own following others' advice. The first time around I took the Ravine loop, and ended up connecting to the asphalt trail. Since I was alone and for the first time off-road, I decided not too push my luck, and called an early day. Next time around I went around the K-9 loop, decided to venture off further, got lost, since someone really bright set up an electric goat fence all the way around one of the sections. Ended up having to venture off the least difficult sections into more difficult, busting my behind a few times, but generally emerged very satisfied. Now, if I can meet someone experienced to ride with, I could probably enjoy it even more, but I am very pleased with the trail as it is. Great time!

The trails are in prime condition right now! A lot of work has been done and it has paid off. Now there is a dual-slalom course that you can play on too! Enjoy the best Tally has to offer.
