Chatfield Hollow State Park - TRAIL

Chatfield Hollow State Park - Trail, Killingworth, Connecticut

Ill warn you up front, this little gem of a park is not for the timid biker.. More of a hiking spot.. Hike a bike extreme.. Don't say I didn't warn you.. Besides the hike a bike, the trails are awesome, lots of slickrock, lots of rocky trail, lots of rock gardens, switchbacks, log crossings, some drops, some rooty sections, very very very little smooth singletrack.. If your not hiking your bike, your riding on SOLID expert trails here.. A constant challenge.. Loops- It is so important to pick your route here, need to work on linking the trails together to avoid HAB's as much as possible.. Green (chimney Trail) = Long hike a bike up hill, some good rock gardens, hike a bike across stream.. White (Lookout Trail) = Awesome trail, only a couple short hike a bikes either way.. Lots of slickrock and techs up and down.. Red (Ridge Trail) = Good trail, but starts or finishes with epic stair climb decent.. One pretty extended hike a bike section, flat-ish but not rideable by humans.. If taken CCW you can bail on purple to avoid hike a bike.. Purple (Covered Bridge Trail) = Only like one hike a bike here, very ride-able, rocky.. Blue (west Crest) = Some hike a bike, great techs, only rode short section.. Orange (deep woods) = Hike a bike at the very end, may be avoided if you take unmarked trail near road, but not sure where it goes... Hike a bike extreme, not recommended.. Orange trail is great besides that, rocks, logs, skinny bridge over stream..

These trails are the best technical trails that I have found in Connecticut. 99% ridable, but 80% expert or master. It's better to give these trails a few tries before judging. Once a rapor has been developed, you'll fall in love.

Enjoy the Ride!

Chatfield is definately my favorite place to ride. VERY TECHNICAL...however very fun for technically advanced riders. There is some hike-a-bike, and I emphasize SOME!!! If you are technically challenged then there is a lot. But skilled riders will find the hiking comparible to any other place they ride! If you don't pick your route carefully...your ride could only last 45minutes or you could end up re-riding certain trails to go to missed trail heads. This is a great place to ride. A great combination of slow, fast, Technical, singletrack with some great switchbacks and some great views! DON'T RIDE HERE ALONE!!!!

Park in front. when riding into park take the first trail on the right. This starts a great uphill climb and directs you towards the back of the park. When the trail comes to a split bear right for a longer ride with faster downhills...look for signs further in that say "long loop" and this will take you down some dirt residential roads and back into the very rear of the park. Back to that fork...if you want a more technical, yet shorter ride...bear left and take this all the way down to the stream and connect to the purple trail. Some VERY fun sections in this.

Chatfield Hollow State Park can be a fun ride for the fit mountain biker with a sense of adventure. The best single track is on the East side of the park winding through parts of the state forest. I would characterize most as somewhat slow and technical. However, if you follow the trails across the gravel forest road, you can find some interesting trails that are much faster. The west side of the park has some good trails too, but they are not as complex and amusing as the ones on the east.
