GOODWIN FOREST - Trail, Ashford, Connecticut

GOODWIN FOREST - Trail, Ashford, Connecticut

DESCRIPTION

From the parking lot there are multiple ways to travel. Slightly helpfull trail maps are available at the parking lot. Down toward the first pond on the left is the begining of the nipmuk trail (blue dot). This is a very technical beginning and is not for an inexperience rider. It is often muddy, but even when it is not it is root filled, rocky, and hard to hike let alone ride a bike through. Continue the blue dot out toward the natchaug state forest or loop around to the red, white,or yellow trails. The R,W,and Y trails start to the right of the first pond. The Yellow trail extends up a gradual slope to the second pond and loops around about 1.5 miles bringing you back to the three trail split. The white trail fallows the first pond and is very rocky and is in parts something I will never be able to ride. The Red trail fallows a gradual slope and a great single track. It contains some rocks, logs, and small hills to climb or descend. It connects back up to the white trail on the backside of the first pond. These trails continue out to several double wide trails or single track that adds miles and connects to the blue dot trail for a looping return. You can also connect with the RAILS TO TRAILS at this point (see rails to trails-putnam) My prefered travel is to fallow the yellow trail out around the second pond, connect back to the red trail, and out around the third pond (gorgeous area) to the blue dot trail. This covers approx. 9.5+ miles and ends with a crazy technical section (prev. mentioned) A great ride for all levels... B

The white trail is obsurb!!! Talk about ROCK GARDENS! The red trail has nice singletrack and a couple of downhill. The roots on the white trail are crazy but otherwise very fun to ride..

Customer Service

I haven't ridden all the trails here, but the ones i've taken have been pretty good. There's some tricky rock sections on the hiking trails and some fast fire roads here as well... Links up to Rail Trail and also to Natchaug so you can get in a pretty lengthy ride here. There's some fast trails at Natchaug (the winter use snowmobile trails). You won't run into many people here at all, plus there's a little nature center open on the weekends near the Goodwin parking area if you feel like looking at some taxidermy mounts of CT animals.

Customer Service

Head out to the right of the pond (btwn pond and rt 6) then stay left on the pond edge, (there's a lot of tricky baby heads here) follow out through some logging operations and out onto blue trail and loop back around OR head the opposite direction of your vehicle and take the rail trail out into natchaug state forest...
