The views are amazing from anywhere along the trail. The trail itself was a lot of fun. There are several places where the terrain requires walking and there are lots of fallen trees (~15 fallen trees) covering the trail. Probably half the trail is some variety of granite scree so getting up steeper climbs is difficult at best (maybe if you had real knobby tires and enough momentum you'd be able to make the climbs without having to walk). Some trees can be ridden over, other's require you to carry your bike over them.

The park service has closed Rampart Range Road due to the fires we had last summer. So, your best bet is to drive in from Woodland Park and park at the closed road gate/sign. From there, you can bike in to the trail; it's less than a a mile down the road. Since the road is closed, you probably won't see another person so make sure you have plenty of food and water (it's a long ride - 17.5 miles).

Very enjoyable for a non-technical rider. Had to hike the bike through some boulder areas, but it was worth it. Also, watch out for the loose gravel near the boulders. Took lots of photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/uberall/sets/72157600356716833/

If you're in the Pikes Peak area, this is a must ride!

Customer Service

Consensus seems to clockwise. This route also rewards you at the end with some fast fun single track through the trees.

Beautiful scenery, Fun trail. Not too technical except for one or two places that just looked impossible. Was out visiting my family in Colorado and found this trail about 10 miles from their house. I'm used to dirt in Kansas and a lot more rocks and roots, but this was a nice change. Certainly beats the scenery in KS.

Cool trail. If you like the Buffalo Creek area then the pea sized granite will not bother you one bit. Not the ups and downs of chutes and ladders (fruita) but remindes me of that. Can be technical in spots but was more carefull riding it for first time, can be doen in spots and in others, yeah right. Banged my climbing bars on rocks a few times. Great views and what a suprise low water levels!!

We rode this in early August and had a great ride. Started early (9:30 am), which was smart since it was a bit crowded later in the morning.
If you are in the area, definitely try this ride!

I've ridden this at least once year for the past 8 years and have seen it get increasingly popular. The views are great and the 15 mile loop is a nice. It is not strenuous at all and has just enough technical sections to tickle my fancy. 4 stars for the overuse it is getting...believe it or not this trail never used to have ruts.

Customer Service

I've only ridden this clockwise.

The trail on the north side is longest with the trail weaving in and out of many inlets of the reservoir. The ride is fairly easy with some mild technical sections. I like the trail because it is wide and fast. I ALLWAYS ride during the week. The trail is far to busy on the weakend. I would recomend this ride for MTB'rs of any skill level. The 14 mile mile loop and speed attainable make a good work out for expert riders. For persons thinking of trying mountain biking for the first time, I think you would find your self hooked. The scenery is outstanding.

As a final note: please take a bring a small plastic grocery bag on all your rides and bring out garbage found on our trails. Every year there is more and more.

Customer Service

Most people ride clockwise.

This trail is a rolling, crushed granite singletrack around a beautiful mountain lake in the shadow of Pike's Peak. The trail is in very good condition although sometimes a little on the loose side, with a couple of hike-a-bike sections and some areas of cliffside exposure that could hurt if you aren't paying attention.

Customer Service

From the trailhead located approximately 7 miles from McDonalds on Rampart Range Rd stay left and follow the trail clockwise (reservoir on your right) around the reservoir.

My wife and I rode this trail on Saturday, we went clockwise as recommended by previous reviewers. This was a pleasant ride and quite a departure from the front range rides that I am used to. This is a rolling twisting smooth trail that is suitable for all ability levels. There are a few very short climbs and a couple of "walk around" obstacles, other than that, it was just a scenic, fun excursion that circumnavigates the resevior including it's many spurs that make it just long enough to warrant packing a lunch and having a picnic on one of the numerous rock outcroppings that border the waters edge. I know its late in the year, but we saw very few people on the trail.

Customer Service

We parked in the lot just before you cross the dam.
