Son of Middle (Creek) - TRAIL

Son of Middle (Creek) - Trail, Vail, Colorado

The climb/descent ratio of this ride makes it a keeper. Manage your energy on the climb to the trailhead - there is a substantial backside climb that you can make if you still have the legs. The ride includes water crossings, log ramps, logs, boulders and greasy desert shale.

Rode this trail on 7/11/03. Great single track thru the Aspens. Not too much climbing, did have to do a liitle hiking and biking. Awesome views as you head on down to Red Sandstone Rd. Took the North Trail down the Rd. Views from the North Trail fork are amazing.

Customer Service

Above directions on the money. Trail signed was ripped off so just make sure you go about 1/2 mile on Lost Lake Rd and then take a right onto trail. Took me about an hour and a half. Climbing up the road took about 45 mintues.

This is one of my favorite Vail rides. The trail is pretty, long, and fun. Just save some energy after the climb up Red Sandstone Road, because you'll need it to climb the singletrack before going down, down, down.

Customer Service

Good route description. Trail is pretty easy to find.

Great short trail. I like to ride Lost Lake and then head up FS 700 and take this trail back to town. Great singletrack with an awesome view of Mt. of the Holy Cross. The USFS is building a connector route from the gulch where the "fire danger" sign and gate are to the SOMC trail - can't wait till it's done.

If you're in Vail, ride this one. Be advised the trail is closed in the spring until June 16th due to elk calving. Please respect the closure - plenty of time to ride it afterwards.

The Town of Vail has extended the North Trail to intercept this trail about 1/2 the way down. Take a right on this new singletrack for a fun, fast trek to Red Sandstone Road. Better yet, ride up Red Sandstone to this new trail, (it will be on your right, about 1 mile up the dirt road), and connect with the Son of Middle Creek downhill, if you're interested in a change.

Customer Service

Same as above, except take new singletrack about 1/2 way down to the right.

Yep it's a nice medium effort medium length ride. Maybe 2 hrs ride time at average pace. LOTS of fun. I like this kind of mostly buff trail with a decent but not lung busting rd climb. One you hit the singletrack you're still climbing (not too steeply) for at least half an hour but then when the down kicks in all is forgotten. Trail is really nicely constructed and maintained - good sidehilling and switchbacks that are doable. Nice views of the ski hill, the aspens, etc - lots of deer about as well. You could connect this with other sections of North trail or Lost Lake or others for more riding pleasure. But if you want an afternoon cruise to introduce you to the area I certainly would give 5 stars.

Customer Service

up red sandstone - when road forks turn right and find singletrack signpost in less than .5 mile on right - then right on only other intersection onto North trail (this is the new connecter I take it from other posts) and real fun downhill to red sandstone rd. left on road more maybe 1 mile back to car.

Similar Products Used: Meadow mtn in Minturn (actually before Minturn off interstate 70) is fantastic - longer and more tech than son of - so make it your next stop. Also if you like long rides the Colorado trail Swan river (listed on mtbr) is one of my favorites in the state and butter smooth!

Nice warmup climb on fire road to the actual trailhead... Quite a few cars kick up dust, but dont worry, youll be smiling from ear to ear on the singletrack.. At Lost Lake turnoff head up on the right for about .5 to the trailhead.. This trail has some of the nicest tight Aspen laden singletrack in the state.. Some log obstacles to try towards bottom.
A real blast as you come out of aspens and descend towards I-70... Go hang out at the Red Lion in Vail Village after your ride for a well deserved burger and a Fat Tire....

Customer Service

Park in Vail Village Lot and take bike path to bridge over I70.. Find and climb up red sandstone - when road forks turn right and find singletrack signpost in less than .5 mile on right.
