We rode up Lone Pine to forest road 517, then took a right and rode to the Killpecker trail which is the first single track on the right. We then took the Killpecker trail back to Deadman road. Lone Pine starts off smooth and will be enjoyed by most. When you hit forest service road 333 or 333A (just a little farther) you have an option to take a right and ride back to your car or keep going. If the riding to that point feels like a warm up, then you may enjoy the rest of the trail. If the riding was difficult to there, you will not enjoy riding the rest of the trail. The trail gets gradually harder after FR 333 until it is very rocky and steep in places, and will only be enjoyed by advanced riders. The ride is not long enough to warrent a high rating for aerobic diffulty, but there are some very steep climbs and short sections where power is needed. The ride took just under three hours with stops to try sections several times and breaks to eat. The trail is mostly ridable (we only had to walk about 100 yards total), but the consistant nature of the technical challenges warrents the high technical rating. Great views.

Up Lone Pine and down Killpecker. Killpecker seems to steep in places to be an enjoyable climb.

We started at North Lne Pine Trailhead, followed TR 953 to FR517, then hooked up with TR956 and FR 300. Bring a map.
We found this to be a good ride initially, but it became quite a bit of hike a bike for the last two miles of TR953. Maybe not for real advanced riders...?
I think next time I will ride up FR300, then descend on TR956, which is a real gas! The views are great.

The ride is very pretty and starts out with some very sweet singletrack, but less than two miles into the ride, the trail condition deteriorates considerably. Rock gardens replace fast, smooth singletrack, and you soon become fed up with the whole trail. Riding the bottom of the trail is great fun if you happen to already be in the area, but not at all worth driving your ass all the way to Red Feather.

Customer Service

We simply went up the trail and turrned around after we got sick of it. Haven't tried any of the jeep roads mentioned here.

Early part of the trail is badly overgrown and unmaintained and generally unenjoyable. Several bridges are out so you have to find a way across. Also, lots and LOTS of bugs, particularly some sort of biting fly, deer flys, perhaps? After 3 or 4 miles the trail gets a lot nicer. There's a steep, rocky, sandy climb at the end, and the trail peters out. If not for the bugs it would have been so-so, but the bugs ruined it for me, so I'll have to give it a thumbs down.

On the plus side, it follows an old telegraph line, I thought that was kind of cool.

Anyway, if you like maintained trails this isn't for you. If you like to get away from the people, out in the middle of nowhere, go for it.

Customer Service

Take the singletrack from the parking lot, it joins a jeep trail after about a mile.
