Macks Ridge - Trail, Fruita, Colorado

Macks Ridge - Trail, Fruita, Colorado

DESCRIPTION

Very technical Uphill most of the way, most of it is rocks and very skinny singletrack. After you reach the summit of the trail, it is mostly downhill back to the trailhead.

Rode this trail twice in 2010 going both directions. Great little technical climb in spots from east to west, which makes for a fun, rocky downhill in the opposite direction. Trail is a blast! Extreme exposure on top of the bluff, but easily rideable.

From middle Upper dirt parking lot (off Loma Exit) @ Mack Ridge and Moore Fun base. Ride Lions Loops West on a steady rocky climb to Troy Built fire road North to Mack Ridge East. Lions is tough and requires a 'hike a bike' in spots. There are great views to your left of the Colorado River. It's a 9.75 mile loop that you should plan on a couple hours of ride time. I enjoyed this ride even more than Moore Fun.

I enjoy this trail when ridden from east to west. It's like a kinder genteler moore fun, its technical challenges are fewer and spaced out far enough so you can take a breath and enjoy some spectacular, narrow singletrack that holds some of the best views of this area, but don't be fooled! the challenges you'll face on this trail are just as serious as the ones you'll find on the moore infamous trail to the east. Once on top, feast your eyes on more beautiful views as you desend to the lions loop jeep road. Had enough? If so make a right, and head back to the trailhead via the frontage road. Want some more? Make a left and just a short ways down, on your left is another fruita classic, Troy Built... GO FOR IT!

Customer Service

East to West and if you don't do Troy built to complete this loop, your only cheating yourself.

I rode Mary's to Steve's to Mack's, starting the trail at the western end. It is very rideable - I only had to dismount once or twice, and that because it was my first day riding at altitude (approx 4500'). It's not the best trail in the area, but it is a must-do combined with other trails. After Mack's, I rode Lion's Loop (briefly) to TroyBuilt (Troy being Troy Rarick, owner of Over the Edge Sports, a fantastic local shop that I highly recommend. Troy built many of the trails in the Fruita area.) Troybuilt is also a fun trail.

This has got to be the most underrated trail in Fruita/Grand Junction area. With exception of the very start of the downhill I rode the whole thing w/o dismounting. Moore Fun is MUCH more technical and alot of fun too, but it just doesn't have the flow of Mack's. I probably had to dismount 10 times on Moore Fun. I prefer doing Lion's Loop over Troy Built to get to Mack's. But whatever route you choose I would have to say that this is a must do!

Customer Service

SW to NE then continue on Moore Fun if you want.

We did the trail opposite of how it was recomended. We combined a few loops of the Kokopelli (Mary's, Troy built and Lion's) then picked up the Mack Ridge trail while on Lion's. The trail was technical and would of been a hard clmb with a very unrewarding down hill on a fire road had we started from the trailhead. However, coming down the Mack Ridge trail was a technical, fun and scenic downhill. Just watch for people coming up.

Great trail. Say hello to the cows. Very technical (like most of the Loma trails) and a good view of the Colorado River/Plateau from the top. A great way to loop back to Mary's or to connect to Moore Fun (if you still have the legs).

Customer Service

Start at Lions Loop and head east towards Moore Fun.

Don't fall.

Customer Service

I agree with below, take it from the top and climb the jeep trails. Lion's loop to Troy Built back to Lion's loop and down Mack Ridge (or skip Troy Built for a quicker ride).

The climb on Lion's is hateful, but the descent on Mack's is sooo sweet (switchbacks, rocky, great views). I can't see why anyone would want to climb Mack's and descend on Lion's (which would be very boring in comparison).
Make sure your tires are well-inflated- Mack's has major pinch flat potential)

Customer Service

Ride UP Lion's Loop and DOWN Mack's Ridge! I don't know why Over the Edge recommended the opposite, but its SOOOO much better this way!

This is what Fruita mountain biking is all about!!! Chutes and Ladders and Horse Thief Bench are nice and great for beginner and intermediate riders. Mack Ridge is the fun stuff.

For more information and LOTS Of photos, check out www.peterbeers.net/fruita

Mack Ridge will be under Suggested Rides in the Kokopelli trail area.

Doing the epic loop I described comes out to be just under 17 miles. There are some steep climbs and GLORIOUS descents. You'll want to be careful on the way down. You'll likely meet some people going up. The portages are definitely things that you'll want to look at before you attempt to ride. In theory they are ridable. Look at them first.

Customer Service

Make an epic of it. Start on Troybuilt. Take the cutoff on Lyons Loop that leads up to Mack ridge. When you get to the bottom of Mack ridge, head back out for the rest of Lyons Loop. Head back down Troybuilt when you connect back up to it. This is a quite long and technically challenging ride.

The crybabies that whined about being routed up Mack Ridge are obviously just poseurs, not mountain bikers. It is one of the most fun climbs in the area, though some people can't climb, or whine if they have to use any skill or intestinal fortitude to get up an easy hill. Ride up, run across the top, drop into Troy Built and loop back to the old frontage road. It's a good quick spin and is very singlespeedable on a 2:1 ratio for those who ride instead of pose.

Customer Service

UP Mack Ridge from the Mary's/Moore Fun saddle. It's one of the most fun singlespeed climbs in the whole valley.
