Horse Thief's Bench - Trail, Fruita, Colorado

Horse Thief's Bench - Trail, Fruita, Colorado

DESCRIPTION

A good koppapelli loop, one of the larger loops. it starts off with a crazy down hill..(portage) loops back by the river. good ups and downs. sends you through an old river bed. that part is very scenic. toward the end it can get fast with some nice drops. very fun. If you are in the area hit this trail then when you're done go eat at WW-Peppers great food and service I recomend the Pollo Portebello if you like mushrooms.. mmmm.. it's in Grand Junction off of Hydaway Dr.

Took the advice from the reviews of MTBR and road this on my first trip to Fruita this week. Im sorry to say it didn't live up to the hype. The scenery made it worth it but the flow was little and far between and when you do find it, a ledge would ruin it. I could see it being more fun after a few laps on it.

Other than scenery, I just couldn't find anything that made this trail interesting.

Horsethief Bench is one of my favorite classic Fruita rides, with fun twisty singletrack competing for spectacular views along most of its length. The trail starts at the Horsethief Bench drop in from Mary's, which is one of the sections where less-than advanced riders will probably want to walk, but don't let it disuade you- the rest of the trail is super stoke. Some sections are sandy, some are solid slickrock, but there are fun-sized ledges throughout. This is a MUST-ride your first time in Fruita.

See this clip for a good representation of the ride:

Don't worry, there will not be 80's music blaring from the sky when you visit!

Customer Service

90% of people seem to go clockwise, and that works best for me.

This is a must do trail if you are in the area. Fun fast one foot drops up and down. On our trip we did this loop 2 days it was so good.

Customer Service

If live though the first 200 foot down hill turn left it gets easier from there

Great advanced intermediate level trail. The drop in is pretty hairy in a couple of spots - I rode down at the start, but didn't want to trash my chainring or body on the lower half! Don't let the drop-in discourage you if you are a competent technical rider, you can ride almost all of the rest of the trail. There are a couple of spots that may put you into a "discretion is the better part of valor" mode, but this is a wonderful loop. We did it in the recommended clockwise direction, but I would think that both ways would be fun. Some nice ledge drops and climbs, and spectacular views. There are a couple of tougher sections but they are rideable for a better rock-rider and most of the trail can be ridden by any solid intermediate rider. I will be making another trip to Fruita/Grand Junction, these trails are easily as fun as Moab.

Customer Service

Start in from Mary's Loop going clockwise, up and over the small ridge, and after about 1-1/2 miles of easy dirt road climbing go into the gate on the left and down the drop. Only a couple hundred feet of foot-work if you won't ride any of it. If you ride all of it, you may be looking to ride Moore Fun instead of this! Even if you do ride it this is a fun trail. After the loop is completed, hike up the drop in and continue on Mary's Loop. Mary's gets fun shortly after the Horsethief Loop and is plenty of fun on it's own. At the top of Mary's, you can descend down the fireroad to the cars, or if you are looking for more, start the climb up to Moore Fun, which is a bit tougher than all of what you did already. Moore technical, Moore elevation, Moore rocks, but an outstanding trail also. We did this as Mary's/Horsetheif/Moore Fun and it was our best day out for a week in the area, in my opinion.

Ride the entry, that's why you're on your bike. The falls going in aren't bad and the rewards when you make it are awesome. Try to ride it out too, it's been done. The trail is fun and not exhausting. The views add points.

Customer Service

Standard. Drop in and go left.

Oh Sweeeet Singletrack! Mostly fast. Some technical sections to keep it interesting. Great views of the Colorado as if the single track wasn't enough already. You have just got to love this trail. I did even at the end of 3 days of heavy riding. Hike-a-bike a small section at the beginning.

Customer Service

This trail is off Mary's loop. Do Mary's loop in the counter clock wise direction (i.e. keep going straight past the parking lot on the dirt road, go past the first dirt road on your left). Then bomb down the last section of Mary's loop at absolute warp speed. FUN!!!!!!!!

Horse Theif's is a great trail. The Dorp into it is technical, but the whole thing is doable. This trail offers some great technical parts and some great easy streches. Everything from step-ups to steep rock drop-offs. It is the best trail in the Fruita area.

Take Rustlers Loop for an easy warm-up before Horse Theif's. Also Mary's Loop and Steve's Loop are great.

This is one of the nicest trails in the Fruita/Loma area. Mix it in with the rest of Mary's Loop and Steve's and you have a nice 3-4 hours of riding with great views and plenty of technical (but do-able) challenges. The drop in is hairy, some parts are rideable, but the more sane among us end up walking most of it. Once down, the fun really begins. this trail has a nice mix of ledgey technical moves, slick rock, packed dirt, sand, single track and dry wash banks. The climbs are all doable and there is only one hike-a-bike section. The scenery is great and you need to remember to stop every once in a while to check it out, even though it's hard to because the riding is so fun. This isn't extreme like Moore Fun which I think is too rugged for all but the elite riders. For someone who wants a challenge that's fun, this ride takes the cake. Great warm up ride for a trip to Moab, with many of the qualities that makes Moab such a biking Mecca. A definite MUST DO ride for the Fruita area.

Customer Service

Clockwise or counterclockwise are both fun, finish up on Mary's rather than riding back out the way you came in.
