Best bang for your buck. One big uphill and one big downhill. With a warmup/cooldown to get from town and back. Climb steadily, and watch for lines other bikers have chosen, they're there for a reason. Downhill not technical at all except in maybe one or two places. You'll see it coming, so open up and let her rip.

Town to Tony's to Upper Loop to Brush Creek Road, and finally up the trail. Go back to town by accessing Upper Loop in Skyland (it's signed), and bomb down Tony's back to town to apres-ride.

This trail was recommended to me by a local shop guy, who said it was one of his favorites. I can see why! Not only is it enjoyable to simply get to the trailhead, it is a friggin BLAST to ride! The climb up wasn't too bad, it is all doable with a granny gear (as are most CO climbs.) The climb up provides some nice views of Mt. Crested Butte and the countryside in general. It keeps going and going until you start to get annoyed by continually saying to yourself "the top has GOT to be just around the next bend..." Just at about that point, you hit the little meadow with the trail starting to finally lead you DOWN! At this point, just hold and and enjoy the ride! This descent isn't really all that scenic (other than the amazing aspens you fly through) but it just is SO MUCH FUN! the word for the day on this downhill is "flow!" I'd say that this is simply one of the most enjoyable downhills i've ever done - it is all about the ride! The whole time i was going down, i was thinking about just how amazingly rippin' it is. I honestly can't think of a flaw or annoying thing about it. However, if you prefer really technical, rocky Porcupine-Rim descents, you may not be all that impressed with this. however, i would find it hard to believe that anyone could not enjoy this.

This a very fun trail to ride, especially on your single speed (if you have 1). The climb isnt real bad, especially if you have gears but still fun. and then the Downhill areas are a blast also, they would be nice with suspension but you can get hauling. THis is not a very hard ride or very long but still fun.

Customer Service

If you start from town ride up gothic road , go do 401, and then when riding down the road do this trail as extra credit.

The climb up through the pasture is moderate, gets a little tougher in the trees before topping out. Singletrack descent from there on out. True singletrack, smooth, hard-packed, very steep in sections. A hoot and a half, you'll want to loop around and do it again.

Customer Service

Counter-clockwise. Up through the pasture, through a fairy tale Aspen grove. Physically, the climb is moderate. Once you top out, take a left on 556. 556 will end at the bottom of the hill, take another left back to the road.

Overall the trail is short (compared to most rides), but has everything a star trail should have including: a climb to get you warmed, aspen groves to keep you cool, and twisty, fast single track that makes you crazy with adrenaline. The climb is not too bad if you don't try to absolutely crush it! Take your time and enjoy the fact that your riding in mtn. bike heaven. After tackling the climb, follow the trail straight (turning off the mtn. road that continues up the hill even further) and hold on and drop in BABY!! This downhill is SO satisfying. It's got some technical spots, but most of the trail is ridable at crazy speed with a moderate amount of brake wear of course. After you get to the end, do it again. Riding this loop 2 to 3 times in a row is a great thing.
Be sure and check out Strand bonus trail that starts half-way up the initial climb. When I was there last it was kinda rough, but probably flattened out by now. This trail is just what it's name describes: a "mini" Strand. It will shorten the loop a little and it's totally worth checking out on your way up the climb for a second or third helping of Strand.

Just got to ride this trail twice, at the absolute height of fall colors. it doesn't get any better than this. the climb is exhilerating and the decent is simply off the charts! I love to combine this ride from town with upper loop to strand hill. if you want to go big, add on deer creek to complete an epic 30 mile, 5000 vertical day on a full circumnavigation of mt. crested butte itself. strand is great for intermediate riders on up!

The initial 2.5 mile climb is fairly strenuous. Once you get to the top the downhill is great. It's very fast; I'm more into technical but good anyway. If you take the canal trail down to the road you have to cross a fairly wide stream. It's a good trail if you're looking for a quick ride that combines aerobic ups and fast downs.

Hiya. I've ridden lots of the classics in CB and I have to say that this is one of my favs in the area. You see LOTS of locals headed out this way when your riding the area - I used to think that it was because you know it's close, short, really good, makes a quick ride - BUT the more riding I do in CB - the more I think it's one of the better and more fun rides around - period!!
To make a nice loop start in town and head up toward ski hill on paved bike path - from there pick up upper trail (get a guidebook- it will be easy to see how this fits together) take upper around the front of the mtn (nice riding!) and hook that up with whetstone trail which will drop you to brush ceek rd - left on brush creek rd and up to strand hill - up the doubletrack of strand (good grunt!) and rip down thru the aspens to of strand - five star descent!!- then hook a left on the canal trail and rage through the sage - so fast and so fun. End trail with good splash thru farms ditch. Now you're back on Brush Creek. From here go left and ride all the way to main hwy (look for singletrack paralleling rd on right back to
town) - OR go right on Brush Creek and head up toward Teocalli Ridge (a tough loop with lots of climbing back to Brush Creek) or take Deer Creek (10 miles of singletrack) over to Gothic and ride back to town from Gothic - that would be a super long day! The Strand Hill from town that I described would be a medium hard 20 mile loop. Truch me if you're in CB - Do it!! 401 is fun too with otherworldly views but I'd say this trail is less rutted and more fun riding. It's easily 5 stars!
