Phils world - Trail, Cortez, Colorado

DESCRIPTION

I would say there are about 12 miles of singletrack in this area, many different loops for any skill level. also, you can ride under the highway and there is a longer loop behind the fairgrounds. For the most part, the trails are fast and fun. they are relatively smooth and are ridable on a hardtail. There are no hudge clibs but a few small mesas. The rib cage trail is the most fun. It is like a roller coaster, and i never go through it without getting air. The longer trail on the southside of the highway is a good workout with a few technical sections. For more info talk to the guys at Kokopellies bike and board on main in cortez.

The dirt road to the trailhead is marked by a red street sign that says 30.1 RD. It is across from the fairgrounds. I agree with other reviews that it is fun flowy and not super technical. As one with intermediate technical skills, I enjoyed it. I would compare the trails to the 18 Rd trails in Fruita like vessel run and PBR.

This was my first time out since I moved to Durango. I loved it. The one thing I would say is that these trails are deceptive. There are some small techy sections, and they tend to take you off guard. 99% smooth, swoopy trail, but round a pinon and WHAM! there's a techy section. Not that I'm complaining, but I don't think it would be the best place to take a real beginner.

Isn't there really only one trail everyone is after? Rib Cage!

Eh. I had really high expectations for this place as it gets such high ratings, but my buddy and I both found it kinda boring. There are no technical challenges whatsoever. You can only ride so many flow trails before they all start to feel the same: "pedal, pedal, pedal, turn, pedal, uppp, downnn, pedal, tabletop, pedal, turn..." Ride this area for 10 minutes and you've seen all you're gonna see.

These trails are awesome- they combine smooth flowy singletrack, a bit of rocky terrain, and of course the famous natural pumptrack of Ribcage.

Customer Service

Take thew outer loop (clockwise) and make sure you hit Ribs.

What a great time and worth the scenic drive through Ridgway from Northwestern CO when the weather begins to get iffy up north particularly if you incorporate it with rides in Fruita-Bookcliffs and GJ-Tabeguache (stayed in MontRose two nights). This definitely lives up to it's growing and well regarded reputation.

Customer Service

All mentioned previously by others and the great guys at Kokopelli bike in Cortez, great shop and nice folks... for the first time down there for a day trip Ledges was too fun. The 'youtube' videos of the Ribcage just can't reflect it's due justice. Starting off just past the pay station, a brilliantly colored red fox provided an added attraction and made me less concerned about the gun shooting range to the west(after 15 minutes, one could no longer hear nor be concerned with the gun shots).

Haven't tried any others but I'll be back for a longer, more extensive trip in spring and later in autumn (the Stoner-Mesa area sounds worth it as well).

Hard to add much more to the already glowing reviews about this place. Definitely worth checking out and supporting (paying the minimal fee).

Lots of variety of riding packed into this little desert area but there
are no big climbs or hard technical, if those are your bag. They have
done a great job of utilizing the available space to maximize trail
mileage without making it feel one dimensional or overly contrived.

There are some great viewpoints and views on this ride (Mesa Verde,
Sleeping Ute Mtn, etc). Even got to see a couple small tarantulas
crawling about.

Customer Service

I did the "all lefts". I am pretty sure it is one way only on these trails which is really nice for cutting loose. The Ledges loop adds a pretty decent upper body pump without being terribly technical. The Stinking Creek loop is one of the best 5-6 miles of trail anywhere. And of the course, the "Ribs" will make your ribs hurt from laughing out loud (or really hurt if you auger in, but they aren't that hard/scary). At the end there was a left turn I didn't take that was called "2 More" that wasn't on my Singletracks map... I was already kinda tired (23 miles/1500 ft vert) and running out of time, but can only imagine it goes 2 more fun. Next time...

Phil's is just plain fun riding! No killer climbs, a few light technical areas, and miles and miles of sweet, smooth, swooping singletrack. Cortez tends to get overlooked because Durango gets all the hype, but if you are in the area you want to give this a run.

Customer Service

The trail system is all one way. Take all your lefts to hit everything. If you only have an hour skip Lemonhead (the first left after the main trail starts) and turn left at Abajo to hit the ribs.

Epic desert riding with lots of options. It's got everything from fast singletrack to rolercoaster jumps and technical rim riding with great canyon overlooks. There is now another 5 mile loop called "Ledges Loop" which takes the total to about 22 miles. Also there is a new entrance trail left at the kiosk which makes the trail all one direction (no in and out) which is by far the best way to ride it. Check out the www.12hoursofmesaverde.com for the annual spring race on this trail system.

Customer Service

All lefts to do everything, including the Rib Cage is a must.

2008 Update on Phil's World: Now a SWEET/FUN 16 mi + ride and I'm not Wrong this time. Orig was 10 mi loop but now addition of 6 mi loop @ Stinking Springs (old homesteader name but is really a remote/scenic canyon that smells fresh) with canyon rock shelve overlooks. The new loop is more technical than the original swoopy, turnie, fast Phil's loop. Phil was 1st person to ride out there, trail system really evolved by voluteers and now a Bike Club. The new trails add more miles, ride diversity, and more scenery. Takes 2 to 2.5 to ride full 16 miles. Riders from everywhere state these trails move to high on their favorites list, and yes you will be smilling at the end of the ride. Rib Cage (orig loop) and Vertebrate(new loop)are blast though sections full of g forces. This trail system is continous crank & hammer, great turns, speed, some technical and some short climbs. Good workout with great views. Durango pro's ride here. Also host of the 12 Hour of Mesa Verde each May, 230 riders in 08'. Check out the race web.

Great Ride between the Meca's: Durango & Moab. 45 min west of Durango on HWY 160 on north side across from Cortez Fairgrounds. Start at trailhead and ride (up & back 1 mi) to top of 1st mesa were loop begins. Take that left riding clockwise and each left thereafter for full 16 mi loop. Time issue? can skip(but a big loss so plan ahead) the back 6 mi Stinking Springs loop. There is a trail sign just inside trail head at park area. Also about 7 miles of trail south of fair grounds (under hwy bridge) but not ridden much. Check Kokopelli Bike shop web or get maps.
These trails are by local volunteer bike club who can use dough, have to pay for State Lease and Insurance to keep trials. Please donate $ or join club at tail head map.
