Buckhorn to Captain Jacks - TRAIL

Buckhorn to Captain Jacks - Trail, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Mellow upper climb smooth dirt / hardpack and some loose gravel 1/2 way up. Good work-out with a couple of tight turns and drop offs. That was buckhorn. Captain Jacks is the other half of the ride, all down hill toboggin run style in places. Gets hairy,,, be careful. At Jacks end, take dirt road to the right for a short cooldown back to the parking area. This ride will kill 1.5 to 2 hours. You will like it or learn to

Buckhorn to Capt Jacks via the Chutes;

Did this many years ago and is still the epic ride of memory. Knew a bit of what a ride it was from doing parts of it before but linking it together, I was amazed to have it not wiped me out (slight lie). I started the ride after working the midnight shift and when I got home, I slept for 17 hours.
17 hours !! My personal best.

Jacks parking lot would be the shortest route for Buckhorn/C Jacks and a good way to not kill flatlanders that are here visiting. After that pick your workout level form where you want. I'll work up to it and do it again ,, not sure how soon though.

I like this trail as part of a loop which can add variety and distance. Singel track in good shape, nice consistent 1 mile climb. Well worth it to access Captain Jack's as a downhill.

This trail is awesome. As mentioned in other reviews it is a bit slick in ways of deep gravel on some of the switchbacks. If you ride it I would suggest starting on Gold Camp Parking lot going clockwise on Buckhorn and then cross north gold camp to Capt Jacks and then at the bottom of Captain jacks take a right under tunnel and jump on North Columbine Trail back to the parking lot. This is a fun trail the 1st 1-2 miles on buckhorn is a somewhat tough climb but well worth it for the Capt jack section. I suggest a bigger knobby tire for traction like Kenda Nevagals.

Not a bad little trail. A good, consistent climb which you can then link with a whole network of other, more interesting trails in the canyon. Some parts are unpleasantly sandy and others can be disturbingly off-camber.

this trail is the best I have ridden buckhorn is a great cardio workout and jacks is awsome downhill. the only draw back is the motorcycles. They tear up the trail and never yeild to cyclist. The trail would be in alot better shape if it wasn't for the gearheads. Buckhorns is supposed to be of limits for motorcycles but they still use it. When you first turn of into the singletrack onto buckhorns ther is a huge rock that is a real momentum killer if you clean this your good. The rest of buckhorns is pretty clear. Be careful of the loose skee on the downhill section of buckhorns, another gift from the moto guys. This trail gives you alot of downhill for little climbing. Always an epic ride.

On second thought, not as long as 1.5 to 2 hours. Good workout and lots of tempting views to stop for water / scenic breaks. I've ridden 2 or 3 times and am lookiing forward to a much faster ride this next time. Probably all of 8 miles total.

From parking area at gate, take road/trail to the n/west and look for uphill trail to right after approx 150 to 200 yards.

High drive is a good workout. The muli-use trail is pretty good singletrack with some cool banked turns and whoop sections. Watch out for deep gravel in the turns though. Great views of the Springs from several points. Bring the camera.

Customer Service

Park in the lot off of N. Cheyenne Cyn. Take High Dr. up until you see the multi-use trail sign. Ride the singletrack until the parking lot. Turn right and go through the tunnels back to your vehicle.

I really like this trail for the workout... It adds enough fun to the equation with fast slalom ridge riding. Plenty of fast downhill and enough switchbacks to keep the balance in check. Seems like too much fun for a grown up!

OK, the way I recommend can be a little tough on the newbies. I am a 16 year old Jr. X racer, and this is my main training ride. It takes 1 hour and 5 minutes to my loop at race pace, so I dont think that even a slow rider will take 2 hours for just Buckhorn and The Jacks. Buckhorn is a nice, fairly technical climb, and the Jacks is just a cool coaster ride. The Chutes will add to the fun of Captain Jacks, with the berms and water bar jumps. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR ONCOMING TRAFIIC! Be polite.

Customer Service

If you want a real workout, and want to save the downhill for last, park at the Starsmore Discovery Center, and climb up the canyon road. Go left at the top on the closed part of Gold Camp,do Buckhorn, then cross high drive for Capn Jacks, go down(left) on gold camp, ride down the chutes, and back up the road a little ways to your car.

I am out here for 2 weeks, and so far this is one of my favorite trails. I did it backwards the first time, going up Lower Gold camp to the bottom of the trail. Nice climb, long, somewhat loose, but very nice, rewarding at the end, views, and then ride back down. Ride with someone that knows the trails, however, as it is easy to get lost out here. Enjoy most of all!

Customer Service

Up High Drive road, down to the lower lot, and then up Buckhorn, and down Capt. Jacks to Lower Gold Camp Rd. to the big rock parking lot about half way down, down the Chutes, then out to the road and back to Lower Gold Camp road.
