Midland Bike Trail - Trail, Buena Vista, Colorado

Midland Bike Trail - Trail, Buena Vista, Colorado

DESCRIPTION

Cross the footbridge and head up the trail. It leads to the old Midland Railroad grade and a dirt road. If you are visiting and not acclimatized beware. This section is a great climb, but the altitude will kill you if you're not ready. If you're visiting you might want to consider walking your bike up to the road and taking breaks to save yourself for the trail above. Once you reach the road, go right and follow it to the trailhead. Stop to soak in a great view of Mt Princeton and the Collegiate peaks range. You'll come to an intersection. Go straight through and you'll come to the singletrack. Follow that about six more miles. Get a map of the area! there are several other trails and roads waiting to be ridden that intersect the Midland Trail. Not too much technical. Great for beginners and Low altitude riders. Beware that climb again. I ride at 900 ft in Kentucky. The beginning of the trail is 8000 ft.

This is a great early season (sometimes winter) ride. It's very mellow most of the way, which helps get your biking legs back under you after a winter of hardly riding. There are a few technical sections that take a good amount of skill to overcome. These keep the trail interesting enough to keep you occupied until all of the really fun trails open.

Coming into BV from Johnson City or Salida, take a right onto Main St. (first stop light). Park by river, cross bridge onto trail. Climb a bit to a dirt road, take a right and ride it for a short distance. Go straight through intersection of roads, hit singletrack again. Take that til it ends at another dirt road. Turn around and go back the way you came unless you enjoy riding sandy dirt roads enough to make it a loop. I prefer staying on singletrack.

We often catch a quick ride on this trail on the way back from the mountains. Because it's in a dry area, it's also a great ride in the winter, but check on whether snow is present.

The first mile of single track is the steepest continuous climb, but not anything too difficult. Great rolling singletrack interspersed with easy wide track (former railroad grade). Anyone can ride this trail.

When you start the trip back, you can really get a feel for what riding on the train would have been like, since you can go about as fast as the old locomotives did along this section.

A great ride on the dug up tracks of the railroad form Denver to Leadville. This was a very fun ride, with few technical spots. It is great single track the whole way. DON'T FORGET TO BRING WATER.
