Bushwacker at Tish Tang - Trail, willow creek, California

Bushwacker at Tish Tang - Trail, willow creek, California

DESCRIPTION

This trail is a piece of dung! The "bushwacker" is not just a clever name, but bushes literally rape you as you ride down the trail, following a 3500 ft climb. The views at the top of the climb are amazing, just watch out for bushes and loose rocks on the trail. The logging roads are very confusing so pay attention to where you are going, or you WILL get lost.

I parked at Horse Lito CG and road up the FR up Tish Tang Ridge. The climb is a middle ring grade, about 7 or 8 miles with fairly dense forest cover, except for a few clear cuts. The trail I took back down was just below the ridge road. When I road this trail there was a trail crew working on clearing the trail. Ran into 3 motorcycles on the trail and the trail appears to get used regularly by them but is still holding up. This area is fairly remote, steep canyons and has great views.

Ride up tish tang ridge on the forest road for about 7 or 8 miles. Look for the single track below you on the way up. Take the single track back down.

Just a minor disagreement with the previous review. I wouldn't put the skill level required for this ride anywhere close to extreme. It is a lungbuster from hell on the climb, and the DH is great, (highly recommend the Tish Tang portion-AND the race, if you're around during July). I have been on trails that are ten times harder in the area, where you fear severe dismemberment many times per minute. This trail is tough, but not THAT tough. Don't be discouraged, but DO keep your eyes open because it IS easy to get lost.
Have fun...
Ben

This trail is seriously in the middle of nowhere which makes the grade A trail found here very amazing. This is fast singletrack, nothing to gnarly just fast as hell, the downhill course is very steep. Best trails in Humboldt county that I've ridden to date.

Customer Service

Climb the 3 grand plus trail to the top and then ride phat singletrack downhill (you better get a map or good diredtions).

This was a beautiful ride. The uphill, although quite long, has a wonderfully consistent grade, so you can pick a gear and zen-out. Also, the views are expansive. We went in December, so the temperature was cool - perfect for climbing. And the trail drains well, so riding in the rain or just after is fine. I've heard it can get pretty damn hot during the summer, so be prepared. There are many fantastic single-track descent options, so arm yourself with some knowledge of the trails before you go. Ask around in the bike shops in Arcata for information about the trail. Enjoy.

Customer Service

Bring a map or bring someone who has done the Tish Tang before. After parking at Horse Linto Campground, ascend the obvious fire trail. Numerous trails descend from the main fire trail - know which to take.
