First time at Briones. THe trail i rode is a good ass-kicker for beginners. Mainly fire roads with minimal single track. Alot of climbing, over 800 ft elevation gain. The decents are fast and Bring lots of water. My 2 liter camel pack wasnt enough. Lucky i was at the peak of the climb and it was downhill from there.

Note: I consider myself a beginner with average ability. My ratings reflect my average abilities.

Mostly fire roads with a few single tracks.

Customer Service

I like starting at the Bear Creek Staging area and doing a counter clockwise loop including the whole Briones Crest loop. All fire roads. Lots of up and down along the crest until you hit the Table Top trail junction. At the very end, a short section with a steeply descending single track. Although steep, this single track is not very technical.

One detour single track goes from the Maricich Lagoons to about the middle of the Table Top trail just below the Briones Crest Trail junction. Almost impossible to find at the Table Top trail unless you know exactly where it is. Very easy to find from the Maricich Lagoon side. Ride past both Lagoons on a single track and enter a gate just below a bench. On this single track always go straight. Almost all crossing trails are too steep to climb or descend. This single track is maybe 0.5 to 0.75 miles, and moderately technically difficult with logs and roots to crawl over, and a few steep descent/climbs that are however totally doable if you have the legs.

A fun ride and good workout if you push it uphill. The author is really wrong about the hikers and horseback riders. On a sunny day there are lots of them, including many with dogs on the lower parts of the trail. Luckily, only the horseback riders are willing to haul their fat asses up the steeps. They have serious attitude, so slow your bike to a crawl or walk it when around them. It's not worth getting banned from the Park.

Customer Service

From the Indian Valley trailhead, keep going up and towards the left on the Mt. Diablo/Briones trail. At the first decent crest, go right for a short fast downhill, then its back up past the boudnary gate. You can keep to the right and ride through the Stonegate Development in Alamo and back to the Creek or keep left and hook up to Stage Road and Wall Point. Think of this part of the trail as your introduction to Mt. Diablo not a route by itself.

The trail begins right after parking lot near the church where local uphill road ends. No horses noticed. First part looks like narrow stony trail for hiking with some simple ascents/descents. No drop-offs. Beware of gusty side wind on the hills. Have a fun :)

Customer Service

680 -> Exit at Ygnacio Valley Rd /East/-> take right at La Casa Via, pass the hospital, look for the church on the right.
