This has been my "home ride" for over 15 years. Trail builders have been busy since the fires carving single track options to the left and right of the main riverbed. Perfect trail to bring a new rider along on, as the elevation gain overall is mild.... yet hitting this trail hard and fast with skilled riders is amazing.
We have many trails in our local ride rotation, but to this day this is one of my favorites. This ride has it all. Some technical climbing and descending when you do the loop on the opens pace preserve will keep you honest, but this trail is all about a snot and droll spraying high speed lope. Avg speed overall on this trail 11mph+ for my group of friends.
You DO at two points on the ride pass military "do not enter" signs (one on way out and one on way back). I, personally, have never had any encounters with a patrol and we ride this trail once a month min and have for a long long time.

Customer Service

Total trip aprox 16 miles (single track options can shorten or extend). Trip time (for my group) 1:15-1:35 rolling.

Park in dirt lot of West Hills HS (last lot corner of Mast and Medina)
Single track begins directly across the street.
Houses and Santee lakes will be on your right for several miles.
Three miles of open canyon later you hit open space preserve.
We do Preserve loop clockwise. Aprox 1 mile trail to the left will eventually pass ranger house. Left and up fire road to get to upper staging area. Single track decent to get back down (very nobleish, be careful) feeding into trail on the other side of the ranger house will take you back to the gate you entered.
Same canyon route you came out will lead you back to your car.

If you ride this trail stay east of the power lines, there are signs for a reason. There are BULLETS heading in your direction and the safe distance is past those signs. The area east of the base is patrolled every day, And there are gates closed FOR YOUR PROTECTION. I personally don't care if people ride west of the power lines, but do it at your own risk.

Got stopped by the Marines riding north from Mast. They were sitting on quads under the trees by the powerlines. The told me everything north of the lines and south of the ranch is theirs and nobody was allowed access.

Fun ride with tons of singletrack options without tons of climbing, at least on the routs I've ridden. From Mast Ave in Santee you ride along a fireroad but there is singletrack weaving through the brush and the creek bed allmost the entire distance and not too heavy on the traffic within the park.

Customer Service

From the corner of Mast and Medina enter the first opening in the berrier. From that point there are many shortoptional trails along the fire road but I like to stay along the fences next to the houses and the upper lakes until the gat to the ranch. After crossing into the ranch I follow the fire road to the staging area hub where the maps are which is past the ranch house (now the rangers house. From that point follow the fireroad in the same general direction you were going up the first little climb to the staging area by the house you can see from the maps. From the upper staging area enter the singletrack on the right as you climb into the area and have fun, this was the best part of the ride through the trees and ito the canyon. After a mile and a half you come to a fireroad that intersects with the staging area with the maps; turn left away from the maps and do the hardest climb to a "T" intersection where you turn right and go through this staging area to a fun rolling trail that ends along the series of trails you came in on. Turn left and return to you're truck.

Sycamore Canyon (aka Sicky) is a great ride that is close very to San Diego. It can be almost all singletrack depending on how you do it. There are several ways to access it. (HWY 67, Poway Rd., and Mast BLVD. in Santee) I usually do this on my single speed as the climbs are not that bad, usually rolling.

Customer Service

I always start in Santee near West Hills High School on Mast Blvd. Cross Mast and start riding the singletrack. There will be several turn offs, as a general rule, stay to the right and you will miss the big sand pits. After a few miles, cross the gate into Gooden Ranch and continue out and climb the big hill towards the staging area. This is a good place to take a break and smoke one. From there take the Martha's Grove trail. This is where it really gets sweet. There are a couple of meat grinding desents, hold on. Keep on this trail until you come to the windmill, then hang a left and back to your vehicle. This takes a couple of hours. Get nashty.

all around good cross country ride.11 to 15 miles dependant on your start point. Most start from The high school at Mast blvd. provides a good cardio for the traditionalist and a bit of technical for the dirt warrior. The downhill section just east of the upper gravel staging lot is an attetnion getter for most. It breaks into the grove for a nice switching single track which opens to a grass plain for a quarter mile. The other side of the field closes onto another short singletrack then down by the farm house and south to the eques. trail. jump the fence and pick you side shoot trail back to the dam, or turn right at the eques. fence and return to the staging area again via the hill base trail.

Customer Service

52 east to Mast blvd exit. turn left onto Mast go up hill quarer mile to high school on right. Park in lot scoot across the street hit the trail and head north towards the dam. continue north on the side of the dam in to the sycamore trail.

I miss this trail. I walked it one evening after the fire and it is terrible. It is CLOSED currently. If you insist on riding this trail please stay on the trail. We don't want to have bikes banned. The HUGE oak trees about 2.5 miles in have burned to the ground. The whole area looks like a moon-scape. The ranger station is completely gone and the family now has to live in a trailer. Whe it was open it was the best trail within 30 min of downtown. A great cardio workout and a couple of decent climbs. The decent down to Martha's grove was fun and has changed drastically over the years. It was rideable but a little bit tricky. Great fast switchback type of singletrack coming out of the grove back towards the windmill (which is still standing). It isa great 12.5 mile loop from th end of Medina. Be cool and stay off of the trail until it is open. Feel free to volunteer to help stem erosion from the rainy season.

Customer Service

Start from the end of Medina and ride north east. Ride alongside the Santee Lakes and follow the trail to equestrian fence. Up the 3 hills to the staging area. Keep puffing up the trail to the right of the staging area and then decend into Martha's grove. Watch out for the technical area on the last part of the downhill it is a little tricky but not that bad. Hammer through the switchbacks and through the valey meadow which will take you past the windmill and back to the equestrian fence. Follow you original path back to your vehicle.

This was an awesome xc, single track trail. Not too much climbing, not too much downhill. Mostly gently rolling hills with short climbs and short descents. It's a little loose and rocky in spots, but that just adds a little challenge. Your legs will be working the whole ride. I got about 17 miles out of this route, but you could definitely get more (length wise and trail variety wise), depending on what you do in Sycamore Canyon and Mission Trails. I saw a bunch of other trails splitting off as I went north to Sycamore (maybe these hook up with Mission Trails--Spring Canyon perhaps?), but if your just looking to get to Sycamore Canyon, just head due north. Great way to hook up two cool parks. I'll definitely be adding this to my regular rotation.

Customer Service

I parked and started this route in Mission Trails at the Grasslands Loop trail. Turn at the fire road that heads toward Mast Blvd. Exit at Mast Blvd. and follow for about half a mile to Mast and Medina. On the left you will see a white wooden fence. That's where the trail picks up again, along Santee Lakes. I think there's a way to hook the two without riding the little bit of road on Mast (your on the road for all of two minutes so it's not a big deal), but I haven't found it yet. Stay tuned.

The Marines are closing the trail where it runs along the edge of the Miramar property. Make some noise with the news media and e-mail Judy McCarty, Council person for the 7th district, and complain.

Fun ride.. not to hard but it is quite a ways..
The first time i went there I got bad lost coming back. So remember what trail you took! Because there are like 8 different trails splitting off the main one..

In some points it is SUPER rocky and REALLY sandy..
Other that that it is a great ride.. you go along Padre Dam and really fun.. I did it last weekend without my bike computer.. so now i am going to bring it and see how far this trail really is.

If you have any question give me a message

( I would have given this trail a 5 if there wasn't so much sand! I HATE SAND!!!!!)
