Arroyo Burro - Trail, Santa Barbara, California

Arroyo Burro - Trail, Santa Barbara, California

DESCRIPTION

Arroyo Burro Trail has recently been cleaned and is an excellent alternative to the Camuesa Connector trail. The trail itself starts where Arroyo Burro Rd and Gibraltar/Paradise Rd intersect. Follow Arroyo Burro rd across riverbed and the trail is about 200 yards up on the left. After about a mile you will end up on Arroyo Burro rd/Forest Route 5N20. Take the FS road up 3 miles and you will see the trailhead on your right (Trailhead at top is right below a shooting range so don't worry about the gunshots). The down hill is awesome.
A great addition to this trail is to start at Upper Oso campground. Take the 1.5 mile creek trail (super sweet rolling singletrack) to Lower Oso. At Lower Oso you need to cross the river and follow the river trail up to Arroyo Burro rd 1.5 miles of more sweet singletrack (be very attentive and respectful of equestrians).

I road this trail today one way. I did not ride the fire road, except for the first 100 yards or so between the top entrance and Camino Cielo (shooting range).

This is a surprisingly flowy trail and relatively rock free, unlike the rest of the local trails. It's not very difficult, but you'll think you're super cool because it's very narrow in spots. There's a couple spots with plenty of sidehill exposure, but as long as you don't tweak out right then and steer off the trail it's totally mellow. The only spot you might have to get of the bike is at one or two of the creek crossings. Stay to the right at the bottom where a FS sign says "Designated Rt", and it drops you off on the road just above the private campground (that looks like good living if you ask me ;-)

My only complaint is, it was somethign exciting and new, but it's not really any better than the front country SB trails, but maybe mellower, and it's alot of riding to do it the way I did (up Gibralter Rd. to E. Camino Cielo across La Cumbre Pk to Arroyo Burro/Gun Range than down to Santa Ynez River and out the river valley, up Stagecoach Rd to Cold Springs Tavern and a tasty beer :-) for the amount of dh single track you get.

It's a good workout though, and anything that ends in beer can't be bad :-)

Probably ride from TH at bottom up AB rd. then back down the ST. It'd be probably a 2ish hour ride. Otherwise, if you're a HT XC high mileage type ride up Painted Cave rd. turn right on E. Camino Cielo then left on AB rd. and my route the rest of the way, even looping all the way back up the pass and home again.

Arroyo Burro is nothing hard. It starts off as a fire road with lots of random kicker jumps constantly coming. It makes it quite fun especially the kicker jumps that shoot you over the washed out sections. The trail itself is very fast and flows well. The switch backs are rutted out so just lean in hard if you want to rail through fast.

There is only one route.

Upper Oso to Lower Oso. Cross river at Lower Oso and follow river trail up to Arroyo Burro rd. Up first mile of singletrack until it hits the road again then take the fire road up to trailhead on right. Go down singletrack and back by same route.
