Double Peak - TRAIL

Double Peak - Trail, San Marcos, California

This moderately difficult trail climbs 2.5 miles from Discovery Lake to Double Peak, the second highest peak (1644') in the Cerro de las Posas Mountains of San Marcos.  The view from the peak is spectacular - west to the Pacific Ocean and coastal lagoons, north to Mt. Baldy in the San Gabriels, San Jacinto Peak and Old Greyback in the San Bernadinos and the Palomar Mountains, east to the Cuyamacas and southeast to the Harmony Grove and San Dieguito River Valley. Since the Harmony Grove fire in '96 several new singletracks have been cut all over the slopes by riders, so keep your eyes open and just explore. It's well worth the climb!

At present a fire road runs several miles along the Cerro de las Posas ridge.  In the future a 200-acre regional park will be located on the Double Peak ridgeline, with picnic and group camp sites, an equestrian area, museum and amphitheater.  An improved paved and soft-surfaced trail will replace the fire road and run the entire length of the ridgeline from Double Peak west to the microwave towers overlooking Lake San Marcos. Presently, there are also plans for a golf course which will significantly reduce the amount of singletrack. If you are as sick of trail closures as I am, contact the "Friends of San Marcos Parks and Trails" at 760-744-9000 #3505. These guys are MTB friendly and wish to keep trails open for ALL users.

I totally agree with both of the aforementioned raters.
The positive: there is quite a bit here, just have to look for it. The negative: the city has turned a once beautiful and safe (rocky/rooted read technical) single track into dangerously fast ice rink slick doubletrack.

This use to be my favorite local single tract ten years ago befor the city and developers ripped out the whole middle section and put in the soft loose double tracts and a small subdivsion. Some of the newer traversing single tracts near the peak and radio towers are pretty good but are short and not worth a climb from the bottom and returning down the soft loose double trails. Sounds like the area is going to even get worse.

These trails are sick! Lots of fun singeltrack all over the ridgeline. Fire roads up, singletrack down.

Customer Service

Take the fire access road off of Foxhall up until it turns to single track at the Double Peak Trail marker. Follow the singletrack up to the fire road at the top, head over towards the radio towers and keep an eye out for other singletrack branching off. Just explore, miles of fun stuff.
