This trail is in the Whiskeytown lake national recreation area. The trail is a long and slow climb usually started from below the Whiskeytown lake dam. Personally, I think is one of the weaker trails in the park. You ride up a long way only to find a (singletrack) downhill that is quickly interrupted by a creek crossing where one needs to dismount. This is immediately followed by another steep uphill, kind of a drag before the last short downhill of the upper section. The lower part of the loop is more fun than the upper! If you are going to ride in Whiskeytown lake for the first time, check out either Shasta mine loop, the Chimney, or the Couch. Much better rides than the recliner! Most of Whiskeytown's rides are described in Max Walter's book, "North State Singletrack".

Starting from the pelter parking area, this trail has perhaps a 1-mile gradual downhill on a smooth dirt road before crossing a bridge and beginning the climb. The first 100 yards of the climb are a little loose/steep, but the rest of the ~2 mile climb is fairly steady. About 1 mile into the climb you cross a ~10 inch deep creek (perhaps 10 feet wide). After crossing this creek, the scenery changes into a coastal type mixture of pine and ferns. At ~ 2 miles into the climb, you take a left onto a very old 4x4 double-track (so old that it seems single track). The climb continues and crosses the occasional small creek all while under the shade of the trees. The trail levels out for just a bit before making a very steep, loose, and short descent into a little ravine. At the bottom of the ravine is a creek which can be fairly deep during the winter months. On the other side, the trail begins climbing on a steep, fairly technical section that lasts maybe 1/10 of a mile. Once this section is completed, you are rewarded with the best single track downhill riding out there. This section lasts perhaps 2 miles, but is well worth the "boring" climb on the dirt road...

This ride includes both moderate extended climbs and very cool, rewarding down hill sections. When I ride this alone, I try to beat my previous time. When I ride with my family, I take the time to see and admire this wonderful area.

Hwy. 299 East out of Redding. Left at the Whiskeytown Visitors Information Center. Follow road to below Whiskeytown Dam. Park in first large dirt/paved parking lot on the left.
From there ride east across road and follow dirt road down. Cross Clear Creek and follow dirt road 2.5 miles, then left up singletrack. Trail leads up for a little while longer, followed by a very cool section of down hill to a creek crossing. following creek, there is a short climb followed again by great singletrack downhill. trail comes to "T", go left here. Just before another creek there is a hard to find singletrack trail to the right(If you reach the creek come back just a little). Follow trail around gate and through a creek. Short, easy climb followed by short fun downhill, look for trail dropping to the left. this will quickly "T" into another trail. Go left and up. Stay to the left passed two trails. Now one of the grooviest downhill section(all be it short). Cross small steam at the bottom, climb up and to the left back to the first road climb. At the dirt road right down the hill and across the green bridge over Clear Creek. Follow dirt road back to parking lot.

WAHOO! What a ride. The first downhill to the creek crossing is steep and lots of fun. There is a little bit of everything here. Recommend for the intermediate to expert level riders.

The Whiskeytown Unit has so many great rides. One in particular I like is called Boulder Creek. This has a steep climb to start and then some awsome downhill. Also the waterfalls at the top are beautiful.

I don't like "road climbs", especially logging type road climbs, but this one is not too bad, it gives you a break every once in awhile. Watch out for bears though, one came running up the enbankment, saw me at the last minute, and shifted his course, but I had to rinse out my spandex!

Park at peltier parking lot, ride down the hill and over the bridge, then start climbing. When I got to towards the bottom, it had a closed sign on it, so being the do right guy I am, I headed towards the right fork, (the far right fork is the one that heads up Kanaka), this was a blast of a downhill, ended up in need camp.

My favorite trail in the area is the chimmney, first, then tag the icebox on the end. (chimney you ride up shasta bally road, take the split to the right instead of going to sheep camp, then when you get to the waterslides, keep going up and cross the creek, then it turns into single track. About a mile past the creek, be on the lookout for a ravine that you have to climb up out of, once you get to the top, it is fun, fast single track all the way back down, then you have to watch for the Icebox entry halfway back down bally road.

This trail is way overrated!! Of all the trails at Whiskeytown this is probably one of my LEAST favorite. Climbing fireroads is not my thing, especially when the downhill is not that rewarding. If you have 1.5 hours to spend there are at least 10 beter trails. Don't take this review the wrong way; put this trail in the midwest and it would be the best trail around, but for No. Cali there is definately better time to be spent.
