The Couch - Trail, Redding, California

The Couch - Trail, Redding, California

DESCRIPTION

"The Couch" is a trail located in the Whiskeytown lake national recreation area with the nearest major city being Redding, CA. The trail begins at the Brandy Creek parking area with a modest uphill ascent on Brandy creek road. At the intersection of Brandy creek road and Peltier valley road, make a left onto Peltier valley road for a grueling (but fairly short) ascent and then descent on the fireroad. Hang a right onto the Pioneer trail and climb for about a mile. At the first fork in the trail encountered, hang a right for the couch trail (going left takes you on the recliner but that trail is usually started from a different location). Climb, climb, climb! Finally, enjoy the downhill (the famous "Trench of Terror" awaits you near the top). You end up on Brandy creek road again and you can do the "ice box" trail (Brandy creek trail). My only wish is that the downhill was longer!

Weekend Warrior

This is one of the top three rides in the Whiskeytown lake national recreation area near Redding, Ca. This would be THE top trail if it wasn't for the tough uphill! But the downhill is a blast. There are some fairly technical sections. Just check out the race photos from the Shasta Lemurian bike race and you'll some people crashing big time in the section that I think is the "Trench of Terror" (it's always hard to tell with pictures). For the lower section downhill, you'll be on the "icebox" trail until you're back at the car.
