I put I ride this trail Once a week because it didn't have a "3-4 times a week" option. I
love this trail, there is the main fire road thats a slow gradual climb that almost anyone can spin up as long as your lungs are in good shape. The fire road i sometimes Kamikaze down when i'm in a rush to get back home or want to take a quick 35 minute ride up and then down. Its very wide, not technical at all, fun rock sections and run off bumps for a little bit of an obstacle. Nothing too technical if you just slow it down. Coming off the Main fire trail above the Nighthawk trail access point is the access point to "scar face", probably the second most high speed/technical trail segment on the mountain, don't drop in unless you can ride a blue or black diamond with confidence.

Night Hawk trail is also a fire road, steeper and rockier in some bits towards the end where it meets up with the main fire road. I can't climb up only 2 sections of this trail because they're too rocky and steep, but those are very short segments, the rest is all very manageable with a good pace and if you maintain momentum. Its very fun on the way down as well, when you learn the lines you can really pin it and have fun through the rock sections. The rock sections are burly and almost shale like in that you will roll and slide around. GREAT FUN! just be confident and don't brake when things get sketchy, power through.

Minors loop is A FRIGGIN BLAST!!! its a nice wide up and down flowy loop with great obstacles staggered around it. there are some staircase like rock features and a huge rock roller on the eastern part of the loop that may be difficult, but the rest of it can be conquered pretty easily. its a bit of a rough climb, but take your time on it and you should be able to do most of it. Momentum is key to being able to clear some obstacles. Just hit things with confidence and it'll be a great fun ride.

THEN there is the glider port section. Easily the most technical and steep section of the ride. LOTS of switch backs, rock rollers and all at a pretty steep grade, its only recently become difficult because of how rutted out it is and because people are moving large rocks all about the place. I don't ride this trail with clipless only because i'm still not 100% on some of it. again confidence is key, looking down on the trail it looks undo-able but it is, just need to commit.

Customer Service

Hilltop park off of black mountain usually has an abundance of parking spots during the week.

The "trail head" for the main fire road is accessed from the east end of Laurentian road

You can park at the Glider port which is a right (to head east) onto carmel valley road from black mountain and then a quick right on a dusty road.

further along on Carmel valley road is the trail head for miners

Good climb in the middle of the city. there are a couple of ways in. The main fire road to the top starts off pretty gentle then gets a bit more challenging and loose. It is a good workout
It can be accessed from Black Mountain Road turn up Lethbridge which turns into Laureation and to top and access the main firetrail It is 1000 feet of climbing from Black Mountain road to the tower.

There is a trail at the turn to go to the towers which gives you access to the west to north decent. There is a turn off at a swithcback well before the towers the Nighthawk trail which gives you access to Miners Loop.or the west to North decent twisty single track with some switchback turns. Nighthawk can also be descended to Hilltop Park theres are some steep and loose sections but the trail is wide enough for a car or you can simply turn around a descend the fire road.

Nighthawk trail can be accessed either by Hilltop park or a gate just above the the Stadium at Mt Carmel School. From the Park the entrance is on the east side toward the Powerline. This climb has a few loose and steep sections which at least for me causes hike and bike. It looks doable but I either spin out or run out of gas. There is a an off shoot from this called the south rim which is tight with bushes a couple a spots but the south rim is pretty flat in the middle of the climb and I find it fun Night hawk runs into Miners Loop. I find the climb more challenging than the fire road.

The climb is not easy and there is over a mile of straight climbing so the 5 rating

Technically if you do not do Miners Loop is not that bad if you do I give it a 5 for some others I realize it is not a 5

overall with the rockiness and loose stuff it can be unpleasant in sections

If you're not going uphill, it's because you're going downhill.

One or two ways up, but many possibilities for the return trip.

Nice views from the top.

Customer Service

1) [Hard] At the top of Laurentian, park near the gate. Take the main dirt road to the top (2 miles). Return the way you came.

2) [Harder] Start at nearby Hilltop Park (end of Oviedo Way) or end of Sundevil Way. Get up onto the ridge. Work your way to the top. There's a short section where you'll most likely need to get off and push.

3) [If you dare.] Start in the Black Mtn. Open Space Park parking lot. Drop into the canyon to the north, cross the paved road, head west on trail parallel to road. Watch for dbl-track heading north and down just before construction area. Climb out of "La Jolla Canyon" toward the park (follow power lines). Cross Carmel Valley Rd and follow wide dirt road about a block from Blk. Mtn. Rd. Cross Maler. Keep climbing. Follow power lines until you find the main road to top. Take north side road and single track down to parking area. Enjoy!

Work your way south through McGonigle Canyon, under 56 towards the Del Mar Mesa "tunnels". or go around Santaluz, just north of Carmel Valley Road, through a narrow pass towards the park.

Black Mountain has a number of nice singletracks all over the mountain. I found a lot of them are rutted out or are very rocky, some sections are quite steep. Downhill the backside is a load of fun. There are some challanging sections especially when you get to the little parking lot take the singletrack that lead down the hill. Very rutted and challanging but loads of fun if you manage to handle the downhill turns.

Customer Service

I don't like hike a bike so I stick to the fire road to make it to the top. Park at the end of Maler Rd. and cross over to the dirt road. Uphill will take you about 20-25 minutes. On top enjoy the magnificant view. Down the hill take the singletrack and stay to the right. On the bottom bu the parking lot you can just ride down the road or get on the singletrack for some more fun.

Good conditioning ride up. The climb is not very challenging from a technical perspective but the short & intense DH is something you will not soon forget. The westside "trail" is a relatively long rockbed and it can be treacherous for newbies. Bring your "A" game for BM. Beginners should consider fine tuning their DH skills somewhere more forgiving. Intermediate to Advanced riders will appreciate the quick shot adrenaline on the short DH. Overall I found BM to be a very entertaining ride.

Customer Service

Take the Fire Lane up and take the Westside (facing the ocean) trail down. It looks Nasty at first... Because it is.. Other than the rock bed not much between you and a safe passage home.

The sigle track is the best part of the mountain. It's a bit overgrown. I've been meaning to go do a little maintainance. Can be real fun. Great loop.

Customer Service

Go up the access road to the radio towers. Ride around the top till ou get to the downhill. Take the downhill stay right, and you'll eventually get to a reall fun single track.

This is a lunch ride for us. From Rncho Bernardo Rd and Camino Del Norte to the single track and back is about 1.5 hours.

Customer Service

We come in a back way from Rancho Bernardo. Basically we ride some truck trails to the east of Black Mountain Rd and north of the paraglider port. We end up climbing just east of the Black Mountain Park parking lot and head up towards the antennas. About a half mile down (north) of the antennas is a wonderful stretch of single track to make all the climbing worth while.

Seems like everyone is missing the really steep and rocky short downhill run just north west of Hang Glider point. (Thats if you are into DH) After the climb up the access road to the very top of Blk Mtn. There is a really steep and rocky decent down to Para-Glider point. Then the trail gets rocky, loose and steeper. You can see the last part of the decent if you ever take the backroad to Rancho Bernardo. It is the same Peak the Para-Gliders are jumping off. Anyway if you are into Down Hill or just want a squirt of Adrenilene (sp?) just make sure to bring your pads.

Customer Service

Start at Black Mtn. Elementary school parking lot. Ride up roadway N/B then turn Left on Rassmussen. The Trail starts at the end of Rassmussen.
