Sycamore Canyon - Trail, Whittier, California

Sycamore Canyon - Trail, Whittier, California

DESCRIPTION

A nice trail along a canyon bottom, uphill in and downhill out. Fire road width but really two singletracks following rangers tire tracks. Go to the end and then return the same way. Watch for tall thistles along the trail sides (ouch).

Ok so i started going on the trail, it was nice for the first half a mile except for those spiking plants all over infesting the train, which by the way i have a rash because of that. All of the sudden the trail stopped where the grass/plants had grown half the size of me, we tried going around thru the river, but that didnt work, so we had to turn back. I was very upset. Im used to doing 5 hour long hikes, this hike took an hour. It was veryyyy disappointing. I wished i had gone turnbull canyon or hellman's instead. Oh well, now i know not to go back on that trail.

I recommend hellmans, also if your in laguna there's the El Moro trail which is my favorite, also good for mtn bike riding. You wont regret it! :)

Just rode this trail yesterday. I found out when I got there that it was right next to a landfill. At the beginning of the trail there is a lot of heavy machinery lying around. Like the other reviews say, keep left of the forks because those seems to have tracks created by the service trucks. The smell is not bad but then again we are in the winter season. I am not sure if the smell will be worse in the summer. On the trail we saw chunks of rock lying around and lots of animal crap. There were also holes on the ground the size of golf balls. Be careful not to over exert yourself going uphill because some portions are pretty steep. I had to walk the bike up a couple of times. A few of my friends got light headed 2 miles in. Overall, it is a fun trail to ride.

This trail is actually right next to a land fill, which I did not know. The smell is not bad because I rode this trail during the winter season. I don't know if it will smell worse in the summer. It is not a very scenic trail and there is a lot of heavy machinery at the beginning of the trail. There are holes on the floor that are the size of golf balls. My friend spotted a deer and we saw many deer tracks. We also spotted a lot of crap on the floor, along with a few chunks of rocks lying around. Be careful not to over-work yourself on the uphills. A few of my friends got light headed 2 miles in. Overall, it is a fun ride but you have to walk the bike up some of the steep sections.

The directions are confusing. Luckily, my friend lives in Whittier and knew how to get to this trail despite these directions. Mapquest or google directions for the corner of Workman Mill Rd and Sycamore Canyon Rd. These directions lead you to the cemetary.

The confusion is because there must be 2 Sycamore Canyons.
1 being off PCH towards Point Magu heading north from Santa Monica. The other is in Whittier. There you go!

I've moved out of the area but when I was there this trail was all I would ride during the week. Now those of you saying 3 miles in and out.....well if you take a couple of those left turns up the hills...there is about a 5mile up hill ride...and a great single track on the back side coming down. Yes you can keep this beginner and make it easy but if you ride this hill it can be one heck of a ride..

Customer Service

From the coast through the camp ground and take your second left and start climbing....people say beginner but this hill I would call advanced because it just keeps on going!

WOW, there are some confused reviews concerning this trail 1st.This trail is open to the PUBLIC and belongs to the Puente Hills Land Conservancy ! 2nd.That "Funny smell" from the creek is a natural sulpher deposit and is HARMLESS. 3rd This is a better hiking and running trail than a riding trail UNLESS you are a beginner and want to do a 3 mile out and back in a scenic BOX canyon.IF YOU TRY to "blaze a new trail",YOU WILL GET POISON OAK!!! .Park at the trail head either follow the fire road back to the end of the canyon OR go approx. 1.5 miles from your car. Look for 2 lengths of telephone pole laying on the right side of trail. Follow this "single" track across a stream bed and up 1.5 miles of TIGHT switch backs(I find it a hike a bike)to the top.You are now on "Skyline Trail" go explore!

Customer Service

605 fwy to Workman Mill Road. Just South of Rose hills Cemetary look for a chainlink fence and gate with a small green sign "Sycamore Canyon" .Drive in passed the rangers house and look for the sign that says "trail head".

I always find this trail (or mixture of fire roads and single track) to be heaps of fun. If you want a little technicality...ride the single tracks. Having ridden the Guadalasca single track I've found this to be a goods climb. It's a combination of climbing and decent descents. The trail will have riders and hikers on it..so please use common courtesy! It's best to ride this in the cooler months of the year but being right on the coast tends to cool things down anyway. Anyone from a moderate beginner to expert would enjoy this ride. The terrain is beautiful. As always..Take water!!!
Some great tucker can be had at Neptune's Net on the PCH afterwards if you fancy seafood, and the like.

This trail is a blast. Starting from the campground, you begin with a nice flat warm-up ride through the Sycamores (1+ mi.), then you can choose any number of forks and hit some good climbs. We like to take the climb up to the water tower, then take the paved downhill (fast) back to the dirt to some fun (wide) singletrack (maybe 3 mi round trip) through the trees.
Good for beginners and experts alike.
Just like Sonia says, get some good eats on PCH afterward to round out a nice day.

Customer Service

I enter the trail from Sycamore Canyon Campground off of PCH (not far from County Line). Just go through the campground to the end and you'll see a big yellow pipe-fence that you can ride around... follow the trail up the mountains.

The two reviews are wrong about this trail. PCH? What are you talking about? this is in Whittier, nowhere near the PCH!

Now, for a real review:

This is good for intermediate/beginnerz. Or, if you're advanced, you can do some illegal blazing saddles.

Sycamore canyon is cool-looking, but short. Something like 2-3 miles, unless you trailblaze thru poison oak.

good hike! yes stay to the leftall the way. this used to be a park many years ago. (shows on old maps) i believe the area is now owned by rose hills. there is a ranger who stays in a house just south of the entrance and if he sees you, he'll turn you back. after you pass the oil rig you'll be safe. for some reason they don't want anyone in there.
i stay out of the water in the creek (when it is there)because it smells bad and who knows what is in it. but once you are in the canyon it gets really quiet. i have seen rabbits, squirels, lizards, many different birds and i have been lucky enough to see deer. i have never seen people here except the ranger.

Customer Service

begining at workman mill rd walk through the gate closest to rose hills cemetary.
