Sly Park - TRAIL

Sly Park - Trail, Placerville, California

15 miles of single track around Sierra lake some what technical with rolling climbs. Look for trail splits that go uphill, these lead to killer descents with switch backs and jumps. remember your shammy butter.

Started at the camp grounds, where we parked our car and jumped on the bike/hiking trail. Heads up parking is $10 and there is plenty free street parking available. Clock-wise route. The first few miles are pretty steep in some areas, did some walking of the bike, I was with a beginner. Right at about mile 2 into our ride, near damn #2 there is a waterfall worth checking out, on the left going clock-wise (alot of the reviews I have read give directions going counter clock-wise saying its on the right). Seems like they might have blocked off this route this summer by tree cutting but it lopps all the way around now, we did have some high water earlier in the year. The next 5 miles or so are pretty fun, not too technical single track terrain with a few trail heads you can take. A few 9-12 feet plateaus that you really have to get on your bike in order to reach or you might have to walk your bike up. We stayed close to the lake the entire ride. About 3 hours of riding with a few stops for swimming. Semi-experienced riders can easily finish this course in 2 hours.

great trail. i did it yesterday for the first time and it was great. only saw a few other bikers. go up in the late afternoon and ride until sunset. the trail is fairly easy, but did have a few technical spots where i had to get off my bike (im a newby). there are some slippery dropoffs near the lake, so be careful at times. overall a great ride.

Im a local so heres the run down. I live less then a mile from the lake. Good technical ride around lake. Stick close to shoreline to pick up hidden parts of trail to ride around the entire lake. Across the road from the second dam is Fleming meadows. (Flaming meadows) hehehe. starts as a flat fire road, you'll pass #8 trail climb up next singletrack up and follow all the number 8 signs. dont go down 8a or 8b dead end at creek steep climbs back up, unless you like to kick it at the bottom and swim in the rivers. Thats called camp creek by the way. you'll loop around to the upper parking lot the go west to pick up the last part of 8 trail . after another short climb you have a fast downhill with good turns back to the fireroad you started on . that was the first 8 sign you past up in the begiining. Fleming meadows is 9 mile loop the lake is a 9 mile loop. you can put them together for 18. There is fishing and waterskiing on the lake and also camping 138 camp grounds. Morman trail road goes up 28 miles to hwy 88 toward kirkwood ski resort that has a mountain bike park in the summer. Or you can target shoot, dirt bike or 4 wheel, camp in the El Dorado national forest 2200 sq miles. Theres are thousands of trails and fireroads to invent your own ride on. The general store next to the lake has a nice bar, store food and gas. Say hi to Jeff and Denise (the owners) ex norba xc racer parents. Up at hwy 50 is Pollock Pines, Safeway longs taco bell Kragens you name it.

Good trail to ride when you live in Sacramento and it is 110 freaking degrees!! I got away and drove to Sly Park (about an hour away from Sac) to find that is was not as hot as in Sac maybe because its at around 3500 ft. and the trail is almost totally shaded the whole way around the lake. Its not too aerobically or technically difficult although I have heard of some "killer downhills" that I did not find. Good roller coaster ride around the lake and you always have the opportunity to jump in.

Customer Service

Hwy 50 past Placerville and into Pollock Pines. Take the Sly Park Rd. exit and go right. Bypass the main fee entrance into the Sly Park Rec area and take the second entrance. You will see the trail head signs. I like to go past the damn and park on the side of the road and ride counter clockwise.

Trail is a good training ride for prepairing to ride higher in the hills. If you start off the second dam and follow the trail till you reach the wooden bridge. Take the trail before you cross the bridge to the right and follow it till you reach the end. Look up to your right on the side of the hill, there is a blm water tunnel that goes 1/2 mile through the mountain. It is completely rideable. There is no exit at the other end since they put up the wood blockers but just cool to ride through.

Customer Service

Start off of the second dam.

Close to lake and not to many uphills. Tree roots and other obstacles to jump or mess around on. Some parts are close to cliffs and other dangerous crud.

Customer Service
