Helen Putnam State Park - Trail, Petaluma, California

After a steep but short climb on a paved road, you'll find a plethera of windy singletrack trails leading all around the park. Well maintained, but watch out for hikers.

Like everybody said before, if you are in the area and have a a couple hours to burn, check out ol Helen. I fortunately live in Petaluma temporarily so I have the freedom to ride it frequently. The majority of the park consist of short single track looping back to a main fire trail, either paved or dirt. There are a moderate amount of small climbs and downhills great for the novice to intermediate biker. The small size of the park limits its ability for more variety and length of ride. The condition of the actual trails are not too bad considering the amount of hikers and horses that hoof around them. There are a couple fun lines that provide some desent riding. Overall its great trail for dialing in a bike or for going out for an hour or two. If you are in the immediate area I would recommend it for a quick ride. Good luck and have fun!

In order to avoid paying a parking fee (not that I am against supporting local parks but you really shouldn't have to pay to get in here) I park at the northeast entrance. There is a residential access point on Oxford Court where most people park and enter. From here, there is a short climb on a paved road. I prefer to get into dirt as fast as possible and take the first right on Fillaree trail (trails are all marked. Once you are here, it leads you to the fireroad and you can go as your prefer. I prefer the South Loop trail that starts at the intersection of the dirt and paved firetrails in the southeast corner of the park. You will pretty much hit up most of the single track stuff if you are out there for more than an hour. Depending on what time you ride, keep your eyes out for hikers, horses and or wildlife. Dusk and dawn are both excellent for plenty of deer.

This is a pretty wheenie ride. If you live in Petaluma, it is close by. You could ride a road bike on just about all of it. Excellent for a beginner. There are some challenges, but Helen Putnam Park is just too small for a good ride.

True not much here for the advanced cyclist, or for the one who likes a long ride, but if you live in Petaluma, and you like to ride well then there ya go. The trails are mostly flat and fairly smooth, it is quite lovely here great views of Petaluma and its surrounding countryside. But not enough to draw someone here from outside of town unless you are already coming to town.

Customer Service

Personally I like Panorama, then down from the Victoria heights side toward the pond where it meets up with Arroyo trail but the one before Arroyo, and then to head back home I take the trail that leads down the side opposite of Arroyo back to Victoria heights, careful there is a washed out section of trail with dual 2 foot drops that salts the game pretty bad and makes clipless pedals less fun, as at least I have to unclick jump in , climb out and get rollin again.

Similar Products Used: Annadel all the way, or China Camp if you are in San Rafael, Rush Creek in Novato for some really laid back spinning and bird watching, Mt. Burdell is pointless.

A great set of trails for any skill level. Some incredible declines that would even intimidate the best downhillers. It is a bit short, however, but if you mix and match the trails, you can ride it for hours.
Good workout on the uphills, and some tricky sections for you technique freaks out there. Fast!

Customer Service

Keep climbing when you have the option. You'll get some challenging trails with killer lookouts over the city.

Pretty fun, but kind of small. Some technical bits and steep up hills. You can ride the whole deal in an afternoon. The views are great, and if you live within riding distance it rocks.

Customer Service

Park on Oxford Ct , instead of attacking the steep uphill cold, a short road ride will take you around to the back of park. Leaving Oxford take a left on Windsor Dr, admire the nasty new condos blighting the hillside. Go Left on Western Ave. then left on Chileno Valley Rd the park entrance will be 3/4 mi on the left. From that entrance ride any of the trails up over the hill, and when you done jam down the blacktop road on the east side of the park to your car.

This is a good place to train if you live near by. It has short sections of uphill, downhill, single track, and tech.

However, it's not worth more than a 20 min. drive.

Customer Service

Up the paved road from the parking lot to where it crossed a fire road. Turn left up fire road to the top. Turn right on the first trail you see and enjoy a mile or so of single track. Stay to the left on this trail for challenging drop-off.

Putnam is a good place if your board, and you don't feel like doing really long uphills. The secret trail with jumps and burms(I think somebody TRIED to make a slalom course or something) prove it.That course is pretty f#$!ed up now because it never really gets ridden on.You will have to find that for your self. If your a freerider, and you have a keen eye, you can find some good s!!t.

Customer Service

You can get to the back of putanm through the new housing being built on the other side, this way you don't have to pay for parking.
