DESCRIPTION

Located directly behind Target at the Desert Crossing Shopping Center(Fred Waring & HWY 111, on Painter's Path Road). This steep foot trail can be executed only by the most fit mountain bikers. This trail starts with a very steep, switchback climb, that zig-zags straight up about 600 feet up the mountain face. Follow the fire road to your left all the way up, to the top. Bring plenty of water- because this climb will test your cardio output, and make you RAIN sweat!

Your reward for making the 1000ft climb, are sweeping, panoramic views of Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and a brake-heating downhill run. Watch for foot traffic, and stay cool!

Cross Country Rider

This trail is not really technical at all. However, it is a lot of fun, and a serious workout. Basically you ride up 1,000 feet in about 2 miles, and then you ride back down. I only rode it twice, and it was while I was on vacation, on a rented bike. I enjoyed it, and was happy to get some mountain biking in while on vacation.

If you want to see extremely wealthy middle-aged women with more plastic parts than a Wal-Mart bike, this is your trail. It is very busy in the early morning and late afternoon. You gain 1000 feet elevation in 1.9 miles. It is steep, but there is a very technical section of single track to the left of the old entrance of the trail. This small section makes the ride. This trail is the ultimate training ride when done multiple times! Ride it at night in the summer.

If you want to lose weight FAST...riding up and down this trail 3x a week, will turn you into a rail. This is a lung-busting bear of a workout, and will get your cardiovascular system in top shape- guaranteed. It is best to complete this in several stages at first, because your heart rate will maxed-out the entire time. The Bump and Grind is an excellent XC race training run too.

Originally created during the WWII era- General George Patton is said to endurance-train his troops on this trail. The steep switchbacks at the start of the trail is not designed for bikes- but can be cleared only by riders with the best hopping and trackstand skills. Once you reach the summit, which registers a 1,700 foot elevation gain- simply go back the way you came up. The descent continuing past the summit is too steep for most riders to execute. You will need a full hydration pack, as frame-mounted water bottles may not be enough.

Park at Desert Crossing Shopping Center parking lot and take the right fork, at the trailhead just behind Circuit City.

Traverse the path just before the switchbacks. Once you pass the switchbacks, continue along the singletrack until you reach a fork- take the left fork and continue up the fire road, to the summit. Make a U-turn at the top and descend. Take the left fork again, halfway down the mountain. This is an alternating route, with views of the scenic Rancho Mirage cove. Follow this until you reach the first ascending fork- which will lead you back to where you began.
