Joaquin Miller - TRAIL

Joaquin Miller - Trail, Oakland, California

There is something for everyone, from easy singletracks to singletracks resembling North Shore. Trails can consist of three foot logs, big drop ins and trails so steep (50-70 degrees) that one is forced to lower the saddle all the way down. Alot of downhill trials singletracks.

Cool little park. Only bummer is having to either go out to the road, way out of your way, to ride uphill, or pushing it up a section of the sunset trail to get to the sequoia bayview trail (which is what I do over an over). Preferred loops? Sunset to sequoia bayview, then right on chaparral to the bathroom/parking lot. You can choose the three best DH trails from there: 1 Chaparral (jumps to start and technical, line-picking railroad tie and rock ride), 2 Cinderella (jumps and looney speed... sort of bumpy when I rode last, meh), or 3 Castlepark (normal singletrack in some sections, but the most technical, sliding, hang-on-to-your-bike-and-try-to-stay-on sections in the whole park... AWESOME when you slide down that last section!). After taking one of those three, take a right from cinderella and chaparele or a left from castlepark and ride down the ties/stairs to the sinawak cabin, go over the birdge and take a sharp left to start the sunset loop again, staying on the left side of the creek. first half of it is sweet singletrack, second half is the fire road where you started. Wash, rinse, repeat sweet, sweet downhill loveliness.

I just got turned onto JMP and I really liked it. This park really does have a wide variety of trails, from the wide easy climb of the Sequoia-Bay-view, to the technical/ jump heavy Cinderella, to the narrow creek chaser that is Sinawik. I had a blast on each of them and even though I rode for 14 miles, I didn't even touch Big Trees or Chaparral, so I will definately be back.

Customer Service

The trails are all super short so linking them together is a must. Since I am still new to the area, I have not settled on a route, but the beauty of this park is that you can mix up your routes and keep the experience rather fresh.

This is the best place for everthing from XC to MAJOR DH!

Chaparrel - I don't see why ppl are saying its a hiking trail - THIS IS A MAJOR DH TRAIL-from the begging jumps and railroad ties-to the 1ft ruts and skippy logs at the end!

Cinderella - VERY RISKY - lots and lots of 3 ft, flat landing jumps. Couple of 3 ft. railroad tie drops at the end with ruts EVERYWHERE!

All of the fun at JMP starts at the top - park across from Chabot Space and Science Center.

There's even some freeriding around JMP-6ft. stump drop, and a 4 ft. picnic area drop- I'll link pictures soon!

I'm not going to say where all the freeriding is - look for yourself, the city can't find 'em.

Downside: JMP is under the control of the City of Oakland-they can close and open the park whenever they want!

They are known for closing the park for no apparent reason-concerts, "fire danger", other things.

There is very little climbing! A ride a heavy DH bike and do fine.

Customer Service

Park at top, ride down Cinderella or Chaparell. - ride left through meadow- take left and ride back up!

Only 3 trails worth riding down:

Cinderella - Technical with rocks, roots, and jumps. Not too steep, but fast singletrack downhill run. This is the best trail at JMP.

Chaparral - Somewhat technical and mildly steep in some areas. It's basically like a hiker trail with log steps and some rocky sections.

Lower Sunset Loop trail - it runs parallel between the Sinawik Trail, the creek, and Sunset Trail. This is basically rolling singletrack that hugs the creek side. It flows fast and nice. But then you hit the Palo Colorados Trail which is closed to mtb's and have to climb the Sinawik Trail to get out.

All the other trails I saw seemed to be too short short, double track, fireroads, not technical or steep, or just plain closed to mtb.

Customer Service

Shuttle to top. Ride down Cinderella to Sunset to Sunset Loop, then up Sinawilk to the ranger station. Shuttle back up and repeat.

Smallish park that you will want to do over and over and over again. DH sections are awesome, and the climbs aren't hellish. You can shuttle if you have a huge bike. Trails, especially cinderella, can get very overgrown but its a blast.

Watch out for joggers, hikers, and dogs. Very heavy uphill usage, and confrontations are relatively common. Use common courtesy and stay in control.

Customer Service

Ride down Big Trees, Cinderella, and Chapperelle.

I once was on the "All JMP trails" ride - something like 18 mi and 4K ft of climbing. So, "trails are flat" is just complete BS. This is technical enough and Castlerock is doable on HT (I saw it with my eyes). I love this little park. You will find plenty of challenge - for starters do not use your brakes going down Bishops Walk.

It can be anything from some nice XC single track, AM, alittle bit of FR. Theres everything. There can be alot of hikers, beware.

Customer Service

Park in the upper lot (skiline, I belive) ride across the road to the parking lot across the street (DO NOT PARK IN THIS LOT, people break into your car!) to the left of the bathroom there is a trail called Chaparal. steep trail with RR ties all the way down. Great fast trail (not recomended on a HT or short travel XC. To the right of the bathrooms there is Cinderella. Flowy with some kickers and RR ties at the end. Every thing can be looped back onto the main trail (sunset) for hours of riding.

3 for aerobic not really hard riding for XC or AM, its just hard for DH and FR bikes because you must walk the hills.

Technical 3-4 Its just some fun short FR sections. And I live really close thats always a +

Just watch for hikers!

Overall The park has alot to offer! you can truly ride all day there are so many trails

Reviewed by: Spokes574, Weekend Warrior Summary: Very shady trails, the sun will not be beating on ya Trails are single track or narrow fire roads covered w/forest leaves Much more scenic than the Oakland redwood trails just 5 min. away Lots of hikers so be considerate and watchful, bell is helpful Skill level depends on which trail taken, easy to hard Directions to get there ========================== HW13, exit at Juaquin miller, make a right at the exit light At next light make a left onto skyline blvd Pass Juaquin millers main entrance, pass the main hikers parking thats along the side of the road You want to park just after Roberts Park which you will see on your Rt Parking is on the side of the road (I park on the left side) This parking area for about 10 cars, theres always parking This parking will put you right at edge of Big Tree trail Facts: lots of hikers, you can not ride quickly, most peeple here are rude. They will not move out of way when ring bell, they make smart remarks when passing. This is the only park I have ever seen this attitude and behavior. I think its just the fact its oakland and oakland just has that type of low class people. Also, trails are fairly flat, so at the end of the day you really do not feel that you had a work out. Also, the park maintenance is very poor. The trails are not maintained well, the weeds are over grown on the single track and hit your arms and legs. You will have to dismount your bike several times for bad trail areas that should be closed or groomed and neither have been done. Seems no money is pumped into this park at all. Again, the worst part of park are the low class rude people -
