Big Tree like some other single track trails in JM is CLOSED to mountain bikers after the first rain until the last one, that is pretty much from November to April. I am biking or hiking in JM 3 times a week on LEGAL trails and I see more and more downhillers showing no respect for that beautiful park. I also witnessed great damage done to that trail by bikers who don't know how to brake without skidding, over a period of 3 years. Stay away from that trail if you cannot respect it.

On a pleasure to pain ratio,Juaquin Miller has to be the best one stop shop for free riding around. There are rides one can do that take less than an hour or you can Bomb down Chaparral and shoot Palos Colorados over to the Woodsminster waterfall(Witch can be ridden when dry).

Customer Service

The Bitchin thing about Juaquin Miller is that you can choose a different loop for each day of the week

Most people don't know but Big Trees is really a plethora trail with one name. There is at least 3 miles of singletrack that make up BIG TREES. It is fast and narrow with lots of jumps. You can really rip through this stuff with some speed. The trail is technical at some points but most of it is mellow. Lots of fast tacky s-track makes up the bulk of BIG TREES. There are some great BMX jumps around if you look. If you think you can handle you bike at high speed you should check this trail out!

We may lose this trail and all of J. miller park due to city shutting down legal access. RECOMENDATOINS: get involved with the Bicycle trails concil, contact the Oakland parks department and stop scaring hikers & joggers and don't tare up trees and trails etc.

The bike police are in full force, $180.00 fine, no warning and they take your bike till you pay the fine if you ride on any UNSIGNED, ILLEGAL trail in this area. How do I know because I had to pay. They are there both day and night. If your off the legal trails your asking for it. The really bad news is that if it keeps happening they will close the whole park down to bikes.

I don't whether I'm more pissed at the 2 faced politician (Tony Acosta) that closed it, or the testosterone crazed morons that rip the thing like they're in the middle of nowhere mountains doing a shoot for Bike (it's only me ripping the trails so that's ok) magzine.

Customer Service

Love to, but the F$%@%^&ing thing is closed.

Tony Acosta is suppotive of cyclists, as anyone who is part of the Trails Working Group knows.

Knee-jerk Neanderthal attitudes don't help our cause in any way.

As usual this is a place that USED to be fun to ride. Now they are patrolling the trails and closing them. Why can't the powers that be let some parks like Joaquin Miller be primarily for Bikes -- especially the upper part of the park where the trails are steeper and there aren't any views to check out anyway. Of course, it should go without saying that people should ride responsibly on Sunset Trail because there are a lot of runners/walkers that use that trail.

Customer Service

You should have ridden here three years ago when everything was open and legal. Call Michael J. Fox up and see if you can borrow his time machine car and put a bike rack on it.

Big trees is nice. I just started riding Joaquin Miller recently (usually do Briones, Westridge, etc.). Unless I read the posted signs at the trailheads wrong, you can ride virtually all the trails in JM, except fern, wildrose and the very lowest parts of Palos Colorados. I rode Big trees (main trail), Chapparal, bayview, some arena areas (beautiful), sunset and a few other small ones today. Very happy that I live so close to a park with some killer downhill (technical in some areas) and some good climbs. Big Trees includes quite a few offshoots. fun ride. Wish the trails were longer.
