Cheeseboro Canyon - Trail, Newbury Park, California

Cheeseboro Canyon - Trail, Newbury Park, California

DESCRIPTION

Starts fireroad and becomes a variety of different singletracks. There is a billboard at the parking lot that plots out all the trails so you can plan your ride prior. The climb through the canyon has a nice reward on the way home. Make a U turn when you get to the top to coast the roller coaster all the way home! Caution: Rattlesnakes and Horseback Riders.

great trail but for the record...most things on this page are incorrect:

1. Chesboro Canyon....not Cheeseboro
2. Map is not correct at all. It is in Agoura - Not Palos Verdes
3. It is not in Newbury Park
BUT it is a great trail with plenty of options for all riders!

Great trail for all types of riders. So many options once you get out the main canyon that range from crazy fun single tracks to fire road. The Cheseburo Ridge is one of my favorites but if you're on a time crunch you can hit up the main canyon to Shepards Flats. I've been riding here my whole life and am never disappointed when i get back to my truck, except after the rain because the main canyon is mostly clay and it gets nasty

This is pretty easy to find because it starts at a dirt parking lot. This was the first time I rode this Santa Monica area trail (last week). I always rode the Verdugo and Angelas mountain trails. This is a great trail for novice because it has good combinations of singletrack and fire roads. The singletrack are not very technical and they are pretty much flat so you can practice your bike handling skills. There are two rocky sections of the singletrack which are pretty technical steep decline/incline (depending on which way you ride). There are several trails/connectors that you can ride so you should pick up a map at the beginning of the trail. Be careful of traffic because it gets crowded during the weekend.

Ok let me keep this simple for other newbies to this trail...from a solid beginner's perspective...This trail is exhilarating. Will give you a thorough and gradual ascent, with a few drops here and there going up. Stamina is needed, bring the water, stretch the legs, tune the bike. Scenery is nice, especially once you get to the top. I had a small digital camera in my pack for my first time. I didn't see or hear any snakes, so don't go looking for them. But always beware. Now the going back, the downhill was like the best rollercoaster in the mountains. It rocks man! Gives a rush without spending a dime for the park use. It is however a bit rocky and sandy in places. I had to get off the bike a few times, but a lil' practive will solve that. There is a huge dip in the middle that I'd advise any green pees to take it slow, just short of halting at the edge and deciding how you're NOT going to hit the brakes in this jam. I didn't eat any rocks this day, and I was glad for it. I know, not so short of a review, but that's how exciting this trail is for anyone. And did I mention how nice the people are that ride this trail...have fun.

One of the best trails in SOCAL, it has everything to offer from fire roads to singletracks, technical singletracks, technical climbs, downhills, etc...

Customer Service

From the parking lot take the Cheseboro Canyon Trail (stay on your left, don't make any right turns) all the way to Sulphur Springs (small creek). Once you pass Sulphur Springs, that's where the fun begins!! Go straight until you get to a "T" & you are at Shepeherds Flat. If you make a left, this will take you to the "Lookout" (this route will have some technical climbs). From the "Lookout" you can go down to Palo Comado Trail or just go back where you came from. If you make a right from Shepherds Flat this will take you to another "T." If you make a right this will take you to the "Cheseboro Canyon View Trail" or the "Baleen Wall." Make a left & you have several options to take.

Im a newbie, and I must say Chesebro/Sheaperds flat/Sulfur Springs trail is great for begainers like me and for anyone who just wants to have a great time. I recommend giving it a shot. I definitely will be riding here more often, until I can ride it without getting off my bike.

If you are determined to ride in Newbury Park try the switchbacks on the Los Robles trail or hit Sycamore Cyn to the beach.

Customer Service

The reccomended route to Newbury Park is to get off of the freeway on Wendy Dr. or on Borchard Rd. If you exit the freeway on Chesboro you will be in Agoura which is 20 miles away from Newbury Park.

This trail has something for everyone. The trail begins with a nice warm up on a relatively flat fire road and then turns into beginner to intermediate single track. A few sections are very technical (I am still trying to climb the second steep) but can be easily walked by the beginner. The temperature is very nice in the canyon and there are many trees (watch for the cool acorn woodpeckers).

Good Trail with a great view and a lot of decent for minimal uphill! (Barring a chairlift.. could you ask for anything more?)

The Sulpher Springs is a good trail to practice your decent skills on, watch out for other less informed riders (or the sick ones) coming up the trail you are going down!

Customer Service

The books all say to ride up the sulpher springs trail and down the road but unless you are sick technical hill climber I reckon do it in reverse:
Park at the Car Park and head up the road till. Follow this road (about 15 mins riding) up till you can traverse over to the left. Take note when you reach the road that is perpendicular to the traverse trail as some cool single track is on your left.. (we will come back to this soon)
Head up the hill for about 2 miles. when it levels out somewhat, if you look to the right you will see a very steep track (looks like a cool 7 sec downhill trail) head 50 m past this and you will come to a trail on the right, take this up for 150m or so and then head down till you get to the Sulpher Springs Trail.. Follow this till you get to the track you traversed previously and take the single track down back to a road. Follow the road till you get back to your car. (Once you have done the trail this way I recommend just riding up the road you exited on, taking the single track then riding up the hill doing Sulpher Springs all the way back to the car.)
