Middle Green Gulch - Trail, Muir Beach, California

Middle Green Gulch - Trail, Muir Beach, California

DESCRIPTION

Get in a low gear and start climbing. This is a steep and sometimes technical singletrack that will test your motor and skills. I suggest you actually start somewhere on Tam or Headlands to get warmed up. Too steep as a starter. At the top go left (up) and hang a right 1/4 mile down to take Miwok trail to tennessee valley rd. Miwok downhill is awesome.

This is one of my favorites! Funny thing is I used to see more riders on it. Maybe fewer riders is evidence of the decline in XC MTB in the Bay Area I've heard so many speak of. Anyway, the trailhead is inside the Zen Buddhist farm. You have to enter through a gate and follow the unpaved road about 1/4 mile. It's well marked with a brown and white sign on the right. I always enjoy what I think of as the 4 personalities of this climb. The 1st personality tries to scare you back to the trailhead. It's the 7 switchbacks at the bottom. Switchbacks 1 and 2 get your attention, 3 is a rest, 4 wakes you up again and 5 and 6 stick it to you. Depending on the time of year these 2 can be very loose and slippery. After switchback 7 comes personality 2. You've been accepted onto the trail and are rewarded with a nice gradual climb that yields better and better views of the Pacific as you proceed. The climb makes a long gradual switchback over what feels like a mile, but is probably half that. You'll start to think you must be about to the top when personality 3 abruptly rears its monstrous head. Take a right hand turn and you're greeted with what looks like a reasonably challenging climb of say 50 yards. It's actually at least twice that long, but it's all ridable for intermediate or higher riders. And then finally personality 4 steps in to usher you to the top of the ridge with an easy denouement of decreasing grade and more stunning views of the Pacific (barring the frequent fog) and connect you to the Coyote Ridge fire road. Tennessee Valley lies below. Go either way for various options and other trails.

Customer Service

I always incorporate this as part of a longer ride. From Tennessee Valley, go up the Coastal fire road and go left at the top of Coyote Ridge, just downhill from where the Middle Green Gulch summits the ridge. Go left down to Muir Beach. Just where the fire road levels off, there's a singletrack to the right. Take this to the Zen Farm and the entrance gate.

Well, first of all, Muir Beach is a town. Thank you very much. And yes you can ride this trail down, just dont get cought. The first section, going up, is the switchback section. The key is just to crank as hard as you can. Then it mellows out but still kranken. Then you come to a steep uphill that will either kill or make you strong. Once again crank. Then, just cruse. It shouldnt take more then 20-25 mins. Just gotta go. Good luck.

Also, if you keep your eyes open, you might see some other good rides. See you out there.

i rode this trail once with a group of riders who were all WAY FASTER than me.

indeed, climbing this hill after chasing them through the headlands for an hour and a half already was a true test of my skills and mental toughness.

this is another trail one must master before one considers his or herself a true Mountain Monster. i don't mean just suffer up this hill in the granny gear and walking in places, but i mean DOMINATING the trail. in the MIDDLE RING. if you can accomplish this, then my friend, you can ride a mountain bike with skill and power.

five tires based on the brutality of this climb and its value as a junction between mt tam and the headlands.

**note--if you're doing this as part of a night ride originating in san francisco, you'd better use your lights wisely.

Customer Service

do a normal headlands ride through the stables, then connect up with this by riding coastal to wolf ridge and such.
