WAY TO MUCH FOOT TRAFFIC. NOT RECOMMENDED UNLESS YOU WANT TO HIT SOME ONE BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIL WATCHING THEIR DOG GO POO. TRAIL SEEMS WAY SHORT. UNLESS YOU LIVE CLOSE, ITS NOT WORTH THE DRIVE.

Customer Service

However, if you do ride this trail: be sure to COUNTER CLOCKWISE or you will be walking up hill the whole time. Trail maps at staging areas. THE WEST RIDGE HAS A SWEET DOWNHILL SECTION FOR BEGINNERS BUT BE CAREFUL OF FOOT TRAFFIC AND PETS... WHICH MAKE IT NOT WORTH RIDING.

I've ridden Redwood Regional twice and I've really liked it. It's got a fair balance of climbs and descents. Good for XC riders, something for everyone.

The East/West Ridge loop is about 8 miles of goodness.

Customer Service

East Ridge to West Ridge loop. You can park at the Canyon Meadows Staging area for $6, or you can park up at Chabot Space and Science Center, and catch the East Ridge midway.

I recommend riding East Ridge to West Ridge going Counter Clockwise, so you can hit the Downhill section of West Ridge that brings you back to Canyon Meadows Staging Area

hey - just rode this yesterday, and it still kicks butt....not much traffic on it, ran into 4 other riders before blasting down westridge...counterclockwise always a good 60 minute deal -- I start from the Pinehurst stage over in Moraga and access east ridge...the rains have made a lot of rutts adding a little bit of difficulty...

Great loop going counter clockwise. Its a great workout, good downhill and its not too difficult that a well adjusted beginner could probably handle if they are in pretty good shape. I don't consider myself in the best shape (8 out 10) and I could do it just fine. It is a trail that I highly recommend for a great workout. Its really worth the drive if you don't live close.

Customer Service

Start out at Skyline Staging area, and go counter-clockwise.

I think this is a great loop even thogh the single tracks are for hikers only. The canyon trail is just under a half mile long, and will challenge most riders. Lots of up and downs. Almost 2 miles technical downhill (not smooth, just enough turns.) The trail was better before 2003. My fastest time is 52 min & 26 sec. I often feel I should be able to cut it to 51 min. Someone said 42 min WOW that's very fast. I am not a beginner. I pretty much race around the loop. Well if you only have limited time to ride this loop is great. You will have fun, feel challenged, and want to come back.

Customer Service

There are several starting points. Three main parking lots and at least three side entrances. Once on the trail I suggest counter clockwise.

I used to ride this trail about once a week in 1995. It was a great trail for my ability at the time and my friends and I loved the convienence. I first rode there on a no-suspension Rockhopper and it was a little rough. That spring I bought a new M2 Stumpjumper hardtail and the ride was a little better after that. I was in my mid 20s then and my best lap time was just under 42 minutes. I always wanted to break the 40 minute mark but was never able to. It was a little scary going that fast though because you never knew what was going to be around the next corner. My biggest fear was rounding a turn at 20 mph and running head on into a horse. One day all that changed when I rounded the steep turn near the end of the downhill and found myself looking into the scoop of a bulldozer with no way around it. I have not ridden there since 1996 and it's too bad that the park system has ruined a good thing. I am in much better shape now and I have always wanted to go back and break that 40 minute mark.

This is a good trail for a short weekday ride. I started at "Oak" or "Fern" or something- where you go up Canyon Trail to east ridge. Being a singlespeeder, it was a bike-and-hike up to the ridge, but from there on, it is whoopty-whoop fireroad for a few miles. After said miles, you reach another staging area (presumably the main one), and the doubletrack west ridge begins, and continues all the way back down to your car. Someone mentioned the grading of west ridge and how it was so much better pre May 2003, well I certainly don't know about granny riding down west ridge- I was pretty $hitless for some of the sections, and I've been riding for a long time. Suffice it to say that I am going to get disc brakes now...

Customer Service

Up Canyon Trail, left on East Ridge, continue onto West Ridge at the main staging area, back down to original staging area. Watch out for dogs, I rode this on a friday at noon, and passed 20+ persons and more dogs. A fully is also recommended, the "rumble strip", or what was once the rumble strip, can be pretty hard on the ol' ass with a hardtail.

Oops. I meant to cite "mark" not "ash" for that surprisingly fast pace on the Ridge Loop.

West Ridge Loop. This is a great training ride! I do aggree that there are too many people to go buck wild and this is a shame but it's a free country right? I have a question. Can anyone else out there ride the loop in under 45 min? like "ash absalom"? I've been trying but this number seems low for a "oh and by the way" ride. We start from redwood road and take canyon trail up going counter clockwise around and back to the street. If you don't know... ride it and post your time. I'm at 52 min.

As other recent reviews have said the bulldozer ruined the best parts of Westridge. I actually ran into the crew on their second "plowing" and voiced my displeasure! They claimed it was done because the "Rumble strip" or "stair case" as some call it, resulted in seven riders going to the hospital. And because emergency vehicles could not get through this section. Now the whole section is just a dust bowl but I'm sure the Winter rains will fix it somewhat. Anyway, on the plus side it's getting faster as more riders use it (I ride it at least twice a week), just don't forget your softpack knobbies. I'm in my late 30's and I can still pull a 45 minute lap (counter clockwise loop) on my somewhat heavy hardtail. But don't try this on weekends, just too many day hikers, joggers, horses, and dogs off leashes!
