1.) This trail is off the radar as it does not appear on maps, and is not referred to by the name given here; "the other viper". almost certainly not legal, it's in a lightly trafficked spot so i think the guys who built it have gotten away with it because of that.

2.) ridden the way it's built, this is a big boy trail. basically picture redbull rampage, just the miller lite version. but that doesn't mean it's easy. lots of big gap jumps and tons of steep, sketchy, tricky sections. like an earlier review states, there's no real analogy for this trail in the area, except viper up in newhall. el prieto is a breeze compared. if you want your handling skills tested in unfamiliar territory, here's the place.

3.) while it is essentially a free ride trail, you can ride around all the big features.

4.) fire road climb up is an utter b***h in my opinion. just under three miles. but if you wanna session the biggest jumps i've found in the area, this would be the place to do it.

i'm giving it three stars because i loathe fire road access only trails. also because it made me its b***h, and i'd like to have fun instead of being embarrassed. :)

This trail is gone boys. Bulldozed and turned into a mostly unrideable firebreak.

I used to work at Montrose bike shop and we would ride this trail all the time after work. All you guys talking big about cleaning it is cool, but san andreas dh bike? platform pedals? whats up? we were doing it and still do now and then on steel hardtails with rigid forks and clipless pedals with no dabs at all. I am glad you are riding this trail and it is hard but very rideable for any decent rider on any tipe of bike with any type of pedal. Also, this trail is homemade and I am certain not legal so be careful. AND DON'T SKID!!!!!

THIS IS BY FAR THE MOST TECHNICAL TRAIL IN THIS AREA. VERY LOOSE AND STEEP BAD RUTS BUT 100% RIDEABLE. THE DAY I DID IT WAS WET SO TRACTION WAS BETTER. THIS TRAIL IS NOT FOR ANYONE BUT EXPERTS. IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH ANY PARTS OF LA TUNA SINGLETRACK OR EL PRIETO STAY AWAY. YOU WILL BUST YOUR ASS. EVERYONE ELSE HAVE FUN.

it is very technical, but it is a possiblity for first time riders to take it slow and drag a foot. the ruts are dangerous, and after the first power line there is a drop off that is pretty sick. first timers should take a friend just in case. when you get to the fire road at the bottom the road v's just befor the gate. if u take it to the left and make a quick right there is a little bonus round that has one or two sick drops and it ends up right at the bottom of whiting woods at the gate

Ah, at last a trail that takes some thought and finesse. Parts of it remind me of home in the Northwest except this trail actually has traction. No rutted, polished clay drops with running water and spawning salmon. A business trip gone good for once, as usually most the trails in SoCal suck major, and yes I lived not far from here for a short while and rode a lot of disappointing stuff. The ruts can get kinda choppy in areas so a hint of caution is advised. 100% ridable if your eyes dont get sucked down. Fun, fun, fun.

The conditions now are as good as it gets, lots of traction from the rain but not to rutted. You should have very good bike skills to ride this trail, it is quite steep with many rutts.

The Country Squire   [Oct 10, 2002]

If yor idea of technical riding consists of extremely steep, deeply rutted and loose singletrack through dense brush, then this is your trail. If not, don't waste your time. While there are some really cool, tight sections which thread their way through the bush, I found them to be a little too brief to be worthwhile. One nice thing, however, is that this trail has yet to be widened into a four lane the way El Prieto and La Tuna have. Other than that, I can't recommend it very highly.

Customer Service

Up Whiting woods fire road to the top where it intersects Verdugo fire road. Go left (east) to the bench at Brand intersection. Keep to your left and keep a sharp eye on the left (north) side. Trailhead is about 50 yds. down past the bench.

Country Squire best describes, very steep in places and through very thick brush. I tried since there was a comparison between El Prieto and this. That doesn't work. More like the Upper Merrill with 20 degree steepness and really thick brush. It was fun, but some sections were too rutted for me and had to hike it down. Overall OK, but next time I will use platform pedals. Don't think about it if you have clipless XC pedals. I give this 2 flaming chilis since it is only for the more extreme riders. The ruts, no real traction when braking and deep ruts make it difficult. It is fun when the descent angle is less than 15%. That only accounts for about a 1 mile of the 3.

Get to the Bench at the top of Beaudry Motorway and Brand Park. About 50 yards east of the Bench
