Pacheco State Park - Trail, Los Banos, California

Pacheco State Park - Trail, Los Banos, California

DESCRIPTION

I am told there are about 28 miles of trail now. There is a $2 park admission fee but it is really worth it. This is really rugged country and the trails are fire roads. There is some limited singletrack in the park. There are lots of ups and downs but not too much technical stuff. It will test your stamina. Some of the views are awesome. I haven't covered the whole park but Whiskey Flat trail is great and takes you to the back of the park. I also recommend Spikes Peak trail which takes to the highest point in the park. There are maps at the entrance and are definitely needed because its not too hard to get lost in this place. If you live anywhere between Stockton and Fresno in the Valley, it is worth the trip. From Modesto it takes about 75 minutes.

I will not come back to this trail, the 20 seconds of downhill were not worth the amount you have to climb to get it. If you are not into hillclimbs I would not recommend this place. Right out of the gate you hit max heart rate and some of the climbs were so steep you have to push your bike up them. I didn't come across any single trail, mostly just fire roads or cattle trails.

The park is essentially cattle grazing ranchland, and the riding is on ranch type roads. The problem is that the lines the roads take are by and large lousy for Mountain Biking. Rather than following an interesting fall line they just plow directly across the park leaving you with a ride that is uninteresting with a lot of steep short climbs. This place would be great with some trail building. The terrain is perfect for some future singletrack that would snake down valleys and give you more bang for your buck. The singletrack I found at the back of the park is completely grown over with grass and no one trail distinguishes itself from the cattle trails going everywhere. Beautiful oaks, red tail hawks and quiet though...

Customer Service

I ride up the middle of the park ( spikes peak road) and either ride the far western or eastern parts of the park. The south boundary is largely overgrown but could be very fun with work.

Good trail, seems like you're either going up or down, not much inbetween. Definitely a Spring or Fall ride, too hot in summer. Good place for wildlife, I saw a fox, elk and wild pig during the ride. Good views from the top of Spikes peak. Parking is now $5. Trail maps available at the parking lot or at the link below.

decent place to ride, i would say there is at least 20 miles of trail here and the views are fantastic. mostly fire road with some single track in the back of the park, not to many people get here judging from portions of the trail being overgrown. lots of climbing with not whole lot of pay off. this is a great place to build stamina. if you live in the los banos, patterson, merced area its ok cause its some what close.

Customer Service

take spikes peak trail to the top. lots of options once you reach the peak, drop down into the back of the park and just get lost, eventually you'll ride all the way around back to the parking area.any other start from the beginning would be pure hell!!!! trust me on that one...

I thought I was going to pass out!! It was about 90 degrees and some of the incline in the back part of the park are seem like 1:1 slopes. Lots of room to ride but it cost me $4 to park.

the trails are great, i have not rode in awile so some are a huge uphill for me but the down hill is awsome. the park is never crowded maybe one other horseback rider but chances are you will not see them. the views are great and in the morning the sunrise is incredible, tons of wildlife to be seen. it is worth the drive from the bay area you will not be disappointed...tbone
