Locals Secret - Trail, Kings Beach North Lake Tahoe, California

There are several loops of singletrack trails designed for motorcycles that get light use over the summer. The trails are well maintained and follow the Griff Creek drainage up towards Martis Peak.In the spring the meadows are yellow with Wyethia and the Aspens in many of the sweet spots along the way are nice for fall foliage. There are many dirt roads in the area also. For a bonus climb you can go all the way to the summit of Martis Peak if you like great veiws. From Kings Beach to Martis Peak it is only 7 miles. Form the top of Chipmunk St. follow the trail up and take the first fork to the left. The trail takes you to a small concrete bridge over Griff creek where there is a ruin of and old mill. Cross the creek and there is a fork to the right following the creek. Take the trail up to the next fork about .25 miles and turn left. There is another fork about a mile up the trail but stay right. Someone recently built a scary bootleg trials course with ramps along logs and over stumps near the trail. The trail climbs steep for three or four pitches. If you can ride the last pitch you are probably expert class. The trail levels off after another fork that goes steeply back down for a loop. After the last fork you come to a road that will take you left to Martis Peak.

This trail network is Tahoe Riding at it's best. Most of it is steep and challenging. I like to ride the singletrack up the Griff Creek drainage all the way to Martis peak for a killer seven mile climb. There are so many roads and trail in this area that are worth exploring. The Tahoe Rim Trail is near Martis Peak and it makes a nice alternate route. This trail network is south facing and the snow melts early. The lower network is open for riding in early May and by June you should be able to ride all the way to Martis Peak.

Follow Myci's directions to the top of Griff Creek and when you come out to the fire road turn left and continue another 5 steep miles to Martis Peak. You will need a map. This riding is not for lollygaggers. You gotta be tough to ride here but the wilderness experiance is worth it. There are very few people here compared to the rest of Tahoe. The trailhead at Chipmunk St. is 6500Ft and Martis Peak is 8900Ft.
