Black Star Canyon - Trail, Irvine Lake, California

Black Star Canyon - Trail, Irvine Lake, California

DESCRIPTION

I down have a puter, so I am guessing on distances here. From the gate, ride about 1 mile on semi paved road. Your will come to a fork, marked by a septic tank. Stop here, rest, wizz, drop off the kids, whatever. The important thing is the next stretch is a sprint. Head right, sprint past the house on the right! These are squaters, they DO NOT LIKE VISITORS!! Most times they have a road block set up. Just get past them before they come out and throw things at you. From there its no problem to the top. Great view of corona and riverside at the top, especially if you make it a night ride. Warp speed all the way down. out

Ok it's time for a little update as of July 2011. I've hit this trail about 7 times and I've never seen the residents of the houses along the road. No barking dogs, not a creepy old dude in sight. There is a good amount of sun after you get past the septic tank and the climb begins. So if you need a break in the shade, do it while you're near the creek. Also it's about 10 degrees hotter than it is in Orange / Tustin area so it's not the best summer trail in the middle of the day.

Its a hard climb for the first three or so miles. It then levels out for a while: so you get aq brake. Then the climb begins again up to the stop point at beeks place. From here you can go another 3 miles to serria peak or take a much harder ride to the motorway. Anyhow, the problems that the last person posted are gone. Blackstar Art ( one of the squatters)was put in jail for pulling a gun on a hiker. Its a fun an relaxed ride now. I rarley do the up and back route now, but if I do it is quite fun. You can hit some long straight section that will get you close to 40 mph.Watch the bottom section, there are some hard mogul type sections.

We have been riding the Blackstar - Motorway route (climb Blackstar, across Main Divide, down Motorway, back to the car at Blackstar). It's a good training ride, especially if you'll be doing Counting Coup or Vision Quest. The fire roads have been in good condition this summer/fall. We've ridden twice (one with a group, once just two of us) and haven't had any problems with the locals that live there, or anyone else. We always stay on the fire road and wave/act friendly. Motorway is fun, but as mentioned, it's loose, and a bit steep in parts. Lots of loose rocks, a bit of exposure. Not a beginner route, but doable for most riders otherwise.

Customer Service

We park at the gate, ride the fire road up to the switchback and start the climb. Climb up to the intersection with Main Divide at Beeks place and continue past Beek's on Main Divide. Stay on the main fire road all the way to the brown gate of Motorway. Descend to the street and ride back to the car.

First of all, that was some entertaining reading of the last posts, especially the spooky, x-files meets the cast from Deliverance stuff! (Squeal like a pig boy!). Hey, in all seriousness, has anyone dropped a line to the local boys (and girls) in green with guns and told them of all the wonderful and interesting folks are up there? I'm sure the local coppers know about them, especially since the last big caper that occurred up there. But think about it, if everyone of you who have had bad experiences just made a little phone call to the watch commander of the Sheriff's Office, I bet you would see a noticable difference in the scenery. Matter of fact, for the guy who had the dogs let loose on him from the "Residents of the HOUSE ON THE RIGHT" that would really piss me off too, and yes, that is a crime. Oh well, my two cents, Late.

Customer Service

Sure, with friends a good cell phone, pocket knife, chain with a heavy lock attached (for the dogs) and it looks inconspicuous to the untrained eye (hehe) First aide kit.

Me and my friend went up to blacstar to see if all the scary stories were ture. we arrived at the trail at eight at night. All fearing the worst none of us wanted to get out of the car. After a couple of trips back we saw some thing wired. As we were driving to the RV area a car stoped a couple yards behind us. Feeling that some thing strange was going on we turned back. Coming back the car continued it's rout as soon as it saw our headlights. wanting to know where this stange car was going, we did a u turn and followed it. we must have been no more than six yards behind it when all of a sudden it vanishes and tire mark where appearent on the road. scared we turned back and went home

I ride black star atleast every other week. It is a great training ride with as much uphill as most people want in a day. As for the folks that live in the canyon, I have been told by the guy with the beard that he owns the road, so I thanked him for the use of it and rode on.

Uh... Me and a buddy (MANTIS), rode here as after my boy flaked out on riding the Louge Loop. I said, "Its new and different, plus we might get killed by some squatters..." Mantis said, "Cool." Dude forgot his water though, and lemme tell ya, if you ride this trail in the summer, you better bring water. Thankfully he did bring a mini-pump, but that's another tale.

Long, painful, boring fireroad with some cool scenery. Keep looking back and using the giant Cross from the church as a reference to how high you are climbing. Make it past the squatter camp (and check out the peacocks) go through Hidden Ranch, and watch out for cows and cow-sheet. Look for the giant soccer ball on the top of the hill... its a good goal. That's the Doppler Weather Radar. Not sure of the distance from main gate to here, but it was almost a 2 hour ride up. Pass through the camp ground, and wonder who the hell would ever come up here, unless they were just going up to do drugs or do some devil-worshipping. Its freaky. Reach the Radar, and bomb down... you can hit 40 mph real easy... I shredded an Aramid Fire XC pro on the way down after I hit a semi-buried rock.

Fun to ride the first time, don't think i'll ever do it again though, 'cept maybe a night ride... but with 20 other riders to go with me.

Customer Service

I parked at the gate next to a couple of lovebirds making out in their car... Rode up a paved rode for a while, to a fireroad that went up FOREVER... Keep going til you pass some cows, gates, old camp ground, and up to the Doppler Weather Radar.

Once on top I have also ran into different guys (maybe)
that had guns and thought it would be fun to shoot off a few over our heads. Only once but dont go alone. Watch out for the Toothless

Customer Service

Park outside gates never inside if they are open. Head up past the house on the right fast & silent. Theyre not squatters but have lived there for a long time and are armed with shot guns!!! Beware.
